Name Contest Awards New Name Salt River Junction to Residential Project in Salt River

The former market square in Salt River will receive a new name—Salt River Junction. This name was chosen for the planned residential complex, which will consist of 970 apartments after residents, traders, and workers in the area participated in suggesting ideas for this quarter.

Communicare announced the selected name on October 22nd at the Salt River Hall. This event marks an important stage in the transformation of the area into a mixed-use district with diverse income levels, intended to provide affordable housing in the established Cape Town area.

Four individuals—Beverly Swimmer, Sthandazile Moyo, Tshepo Mooketsi, and Munaasira Colbie—jointly proposed the winning name and will receive a prize of 10,000 rand.

The naming initiative started in August 2026 when Communicare invited people who live, work, and trade in the area to submit their suggestions for the new quarter. The organization emphasized that the process aimed to make the community's voice a central element of the development that will shape the future of the area.

Communicare stated that Salt River Junction is intended to address the demand for affordable housing in convenient locations with access to jobs, transport, schools, and various services. Instead of placing low-cost homes on the city outskirts, the project integrates housing into the existing neighborhood, which, according to the organization, may help achieve spatial justice and reduce the burden of long commutes.

The 970 apartments will become part of a mixed-use district that will include commercial premises, public amenities, and facilities for the local community. Furthermore, the project's development aims to support local businesses and traders while preserving important heritage sites in Salt River.

Reyana Nacerodien, Head of Marketing and Communications at Communicare, noted that from the beginning, the organization understood that this quarter would become part of the future of Salt River and should have a name belonging to the people who live, work, and trade in this zone. The Communicare team stated: 'Inviting the community to name the quarter was a way to ensure that local voices are not just consulted, but are central to shaping the identity of this place.'

Thabo Mashologu, General Manager of Communicare for Property Development and Investments, stated that the project will have an impact beyond simple housing construction. He noted: 'This property will have a truly remarkable impact, from the housing and jobs created to improvements in safety; tangible changes will occur.'
