Dr. Humalo was long considered an archetype of South African football due to his high playing abilities, charismatic on-screen presence, and in-depth analysis on SABC Sport, making him the embodiment of a 'complete football personality.'
However, the time has come for Humalo to move beyond being just a face of football. His appointment as the new Vice-Chair of the SAFA Technical Committee marks a new chapter and possibly the most important role in his career after his playing days.
The Technical Committee operates under the auspices of the National Executive Committee (NEC), which oversees the association's administrative structures, including Chief Executive Director Lindiwe Mponjako and President Danny Jordaan.
The committee is responsible for appointing national team coaches, implementing training methodologies, and comprehensively evaluating the performance of the national teams.
Under the leadership of Chairman Jack Maluleke and Humalo, the committee supervises Technical Director Molefi Ntseki, as well as all national team tacticians, including Bafana Bafana coach Pitsos Mosimane and Banyana Banyana head coach Desire Ellis.
Given the high caliber of the coaching staff, Humalo has the opportunity to work with a team of competent, successful, and experienced coaches.
Although he may not possess the same credentials as them, he holds coaching qualifications and previously served as a technical director at Baroka FC, albeit briefly.
Nevertheless, in his post-playing career, the most valuable experience will likely be what Humalo gained during the peak of his playing career. His task is not to find the next Dr. Humalo, but to ensure that past, present, and future talents receive the necessary support to develop and thrive.
There is widespread dissatisfaction regarding the lack of former players in SAFA structures, and this is valid. While their playing experience may differ, the knowledge and expertise they have accumulated over the years can positively influence the current and next generation of players, as the fundamentals of football remain largely unchanged.
Recognizing that players earn significantly more than in the past, the support needed to nurture a complete footballer goes beyond salary. Before players can take to the field, they require support in maintaining their well-being both at home and on the training pitch.
SAFA's development structures exist for a reason: they are designed to identify, develop, and nurture the best talents in South African football. This is why the specific needs of players must be met at every stage of their development.
This role will require Humalo to be open to learning and adapting to the situation as it evolves, as a hasty approach could undermine his efforts. However, he is supported by having presidents of clubs like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates—Kaizer Motaung and Irvin Khosa—among his mentors.
This week, Humalo visited Motaung to secure his support following the new appointment. This was an encouraging step in the right direction, considering Motaung played a key role in shaping his career and remains one of the most respected visionaries in South African sports and entertainment.
Motaung stated on the club's website: 'The Doctor understands the game very well. He will bring everything he developed throughout his career, spanning many years as a player and a coach, into the SAFA structures. We wish him all the best and hope to have a longer meeting with him in the next couple of weeks.'
Having also received an honorary doctorate from Tshwane University of Technology earlier this year, Humalo enters this field with significant backing. It is time for this South African icon to step out of the studio lights and contribute to real progress behind the scenes.
