Second Ebola death registered in Kenya; confirmed cases reach nine

The Kenyan Ministry of Health reported the registration of a second death from the Ebola virus, noting that nine confirmed cases have been recorded in the country.

The latest victim, a 65-year-old woman and close relative of the first patient, died on Friday while receiving treatment. According to the ministry, she began showing symptoms on October 13 while in quarantine.

Currently, seven other patients are undergoing treatment in two isolation facilities. All eight secondary cases are linked to the first imported case, and authorities state there are no signs of wider community spread.

The first patient, a man from Kenya who was residing in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), arrived in Nairobi via Uganda on October 3. He died on October 5 after receiving medical care in several DRC hospitals, after which he received a safe and dignified burial.

Kenya has strengthened screening procedures at entry points, including checks for travelers arriving from the DRC, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Angola, Zambia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic. Travelers from these countries are required to complete health declaration forms to support contact tracing and screening efforts.

To limit further spread of the infection, authorities continue to implement measures such as quarantine, patient isolation, contact tracing, and enhanced border control.
