Constipation is a common issue that can affect anyone, but prolonged persistence of this condition can potentially lead to rectal cancer. Professor Dr. M. D. Re from the Department of Surgical Oncology at AIIMS in New Delhi discussed when constipation poses a danger and what the symptoms of rectal cancer are.
According to Dr. M. D. Re, if constipation persists for a long time, some people may develop hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are inflammation of blood vessels in the lower part of the anus and rectum, which can manifest as bleeding, itching, discomfort, or a feeling of a lump. Although hemorrhoids do not necessarily turn into cancer themselves, their presence does not rule out the possibility of developing an oncological disease. Dr. Re emphasizes that if there is blood in the intestines, a medical examination must be undergone, and this symptom should not be ignored.
Extra caution should be exercised if constipation lasts for years and the patient develops other signs of cancer, such as unexplained weight loss; in such cases, a doctor's consultation is required.
Dr. Nitesh Rohatgi, Director of Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), commented on the issue of blood in stool. He noted that the appearance of blood in stool is not always a sign of cancer, but constant changes in bowel habits should not be ignored. He also added that early detection of rectal cancer allows for successful treatment and prevention of the disease. Since colorectal cancer cases occur among young people, awareness and timely examinations are extremely important.
Symptoms of rectal cancer may include:
- Bleeding from the rectum
- Chronic constipation
- Diarrhea
- Unexplained weight loss
- Abdominal pain
- Anemia
