Joburg Ballet to present 'Carmen' in Pretoria following successful performances in Johannesburg

The Joburg Ballet company will bring its production of 'Carmen' to the stage of the South African State Theatre in Pretoria on October 24 and 25. This performance follows a successful run of ten shows held in Johannesburg.

This ballet, choreographed by South African choreographer Veronica Paeper to music by Georges Bizet, is part of the celebration of Joburg Ballet's 25th anniversary. Artistic Director Dan Hurst noted that 'Carmen' symbolizes continuity, high quality, and renewal, highlighting the dramatic narrative, virtuosic dance, and long-term creative collaboration that have defined the path of Joburg Ballet.

During the performances in Pretoria, other dancers will take on the lead roles of Carmen and Don José. On Saturday, October 24, at 3:00 PM, Savannah Jacobson and Mario Gaglione will debut. On Sunday, October 25, Latoya Mokoena will perform as Carmen, and Miles Carrot as Don José. Mokoena previously debuted in this role during tours in Johannesburg.

The Johannesburg season featured leading dancers Revilla Jones and Monique Christine in principal roles, as well as Ryoko Yagyu and Ivan Domiciano, who also made their debuts in leading roles. A new pair, consisting of Darragh Auraids and Bruno Miranda, also participated in the season.

Hurst emphasized that this production was chosen to complement other works within the company's anniversary season. He explained that each production intentionally reflects a different facet of the company's artistic identity. 'Carmen' serves as an ideal artistic counterpoint to the ethereal romanticism of 'Giselle', the elegant refinement and vast beauty of 'Celestial Bodies', and the visceral theatrical power of 'Bakhchi'.

Under the direction of Veronica Paeper, one of South Africa's most distinguished choreographers, and thanks to Georges Bizet's unforgettable score, the production comes alive through the exceptional dancers of Joburg Ballet. It promises to be one of the landmark events of Joburg Ballet's anniversary season.

Paeper's production also unites the dancers and staff of the ballet who have worked with her over many years. Choreographer Kim Vieira and assistant choreographer Nicole Ferreira-Dill support this production, as they performed under Paeper's direction in several of her works throughout their careers.

The performances in Pretoria will take place at the South African State Theatre on Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, both at 3:00 PM. More detailed information about Joburg Ballet's 25th anniversary is available on the website www.joburgballet.com.
