An incident occurred during the second match of the five-match T20 series between India and New Zealand, scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, which affected the composition of the Indian squad. Star player Ishan Kishan will be unable to participate in the game due to groin strain.
The Indian Cricket Council reported this situation. Consequently, there is a high probability that 15-year-old Vaibha Suryavanshi will take Ishan Kishan's place in the starting lineup. The Indian team's head coach for batting, Sitanshu Kotak, also commented on Ishan's injury, noting that the groin issue was the reason for the change in batting order in the first T20.
At a press conference, Sitanshu Kotak stated that he had seen many speculations about this matter. He clarified that Ishan's groin strain led to a change in the attack order, and that Ishan's chances of playing in the next match are low. Kotak added: 'If Ishan does not play, then Vaibha is definitely among the strong contenders for his spot.'
Ishan Kishan's injury has increased Vaibha Suryavanshi's chances of making the team. Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are established openers, and the management is satisfied with their current form. If Vaibha enters the starting XI, Sanju Samson might play at the third position.
Before the first T20, captain Shreyas Iyer spoke about Vaibha Suryavanshi, saying that he needs to wait for his turn. He emphasized that the player is still very young and has many years to earn his chance, as both opening batsmen are consistently scoring runs and have won the World Cup. Iyer also noted the importance of gaining experience in foreign conditions, believing it will help the player understand local grounds and conditions, allowing him to better prepare for future tours and assist other players in such circumstances.
In the first T20 against New Zealand, Tilak Verma played at the third position. Tilak scored six runs off 11 balls, while Ishan Kishan was withdrawn after one run off three balls. Michael Bresshaw sent Tilak, and Mitchell Jenner sent Ishan to the bench. Nevertheless, India managed to reach a target of 226 runs, leaving four wickets in hand. Now attention will be focused on Ishan's availability and the selection of Vaibha in the second match.
Vaibha Suryavanshi has demonstrated his attacking prowess, scoring 776 runs in the IPL season for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2026. For the Indian national team, he has scored 246 runs in eight T20Is, at an average rate of 186.36 and two half-centuries. His last international match was at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, where he participated in the semi-final against Sri Lanka and the final against Pakistan. After that, he was not included in the starting lineup for the T20 series against West India.
