Joe Root becomes the first English player to score 8000 runs in ODI format

The great English batsman Joe Root has achieved significant success in ODI cricket, becoming the first Englishman to surpass the 8000-run mark in this format.

He reached this milestone during a match against Sri Lanka as part of the ODI Tri-series on Thursday (October 22). Root scored 69 runs off 66 balls in the match, which was held at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. This innings was his 186th in ODIs, after which he exceeded the 8000-run threshold, thus cementing his unique position in English ODI history.

To date, Joe Root has accumulated 8005 runs in 197 international ODI matches, with an average of 50.66 and a strike rate of 87.83. His career includes 20 centuries and 49 half-centuries. His best score in this format is 166 runs. Among the players who have scored the most runs for England in ODIs, former captain Aaron Morgan ranks second with 6957 runs. Other players listed include Jos Buttler with 5678, Ian Bell with 5416, and Paul Collingwood with 5092 runs.

Joe Root made his ODI debut against India in Rajkot in 2013. He is counted among the most reliable players for the English team over the last decade due to his ability to stay at the crease and increase the tempo of the game as needed, which has ensured him consistent success in this format.

In 2015, Joe Root scored 2228 runs across all formats of international cricket, and in 2016, he scored 2570 runs. In these two years, he was the English batsman who scored the most runs across all formats. Although Root stepped away from ODIs in 2020, he returned to the squad before the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Despite England's campaign not meeting expectations, Root managed to score three half-centuries. Crossing the 8000-run mark is another major milestone in his long and consistent international career.
