Open call for artists to participate in the XIX Venice Biennale in Istanbul

The open call for participation in the XIX Istanbul Biennale aims to deepen a specific line of inquiry within the broader conceptual framework of the Biennale itself. In their invitation text to artists, the curators stated that art cannot stop wars or resolve their root causes, but it can create space for dissent, doubt, and the imagination of alternatives.

They emphasized that viewing war through the prism of art carries historical responsibility and practical value, as it allows for illumination of what official reports overlook. By contrasting individual memories with collective and state narratives, artists can open nuanced pathways for understanding life in extreme conditions, as well as the questions of courage, complicity, ethics, and resistance that war generates.

According to the application guidelines, the project proposal must directly address the themes mentioned in the invitation, not exceed 3500 characters (excluding spaces), and the file size must not exceed 10 MB. The candidate's portfolio must demonstrate their past work and experience, with a size limit of 100 MB. Applications must be submitted via the online form on the website iksv.slideroom.com.

The call is open to artists from Turkey and abroad working in all disciplines. All applications must be presented in English or Turkish, and all files uploaded into the corresponding fields of the online form. Selected artists will be invited to participate in additional discussions, which may take place either in person or online.

The deadline for submitting applications is set for 23:59 on November 22, 2026 (Istanbul time, UTC+3). Additional information can be requested via email at ist.biennial@iksv.org.
