Waste management problems persist in Uzbekistan despite billions of funds being allocated

The legislative chamber of the Oliy Majlis sent an official request to the Director of the Waste Management Agency and Circular Economy Development, Sh. Hasanov. Deputies demanded information on the current work with household waste, progress in developing the circular economy, and measures to improve the system for paying collection and removal services, according to a report from the lower house's information service.

Uzbekistan approved the Strategy for Solid Household Waste Management for the period 2019 to 2028, and numerous presidential decrees and resolutions have been adopted to promote the development of this sector.

386.5 billion soums in investments were allocated to strengthen the material and technical base of companies involved in collecting and transporting household waste. Additionally, projects worth over 933 million US dollars are being implemented in Tashkent and six regions—Tashkent, Kashkadarya, Samarkand, Fergana, Andijan, and Namangan. These projects include waste processing, including generating electricity through incineration.

Nevertheless, an analysis conducted by deputies in various regions revealed persistent shortcomings in this industry. Among these are the slowdown in landfill restoration work, as well as the fact that some of these landfills do not meet established environmental standards, sanitary requirements, and fire safety norms.

Additional complaints relate to the quality of services provided to citizens for the collection and removal of household waste.
