UK government accused of hypocrisy over ban on Palestinian flags in schools

The UK government has faced accusations of hypocrisy after the Department for Education ruled that students should not display Palestinian flags in educational institutions. This comes amid the fact that the government had previously actively supported the display of Ukrainian flags in schools and made other political statements concerning Ukraine.

On Wednesday, the Secretary of State for Education, Lucy Powell, told Sky News that schools should not become platforms for protests or expressing opinions on global geopolitical events. When asked about whether students were allowed to display Palestinian flags, she responded that there was no such expectation from schools, as educational institutions must remain impartial.

Previously, in November, Powell's predecessor, Bridget Phillipson, was filmed in a classroom where students were waving the Ukrainian flag. This footage was published by the Department for Education to promote the 'Schools-Ukraine Partnership' program. Furthermore, on August 24, 2024, the Department for Education issued a statement noting that on Ukrainian Independence Day they celebrate everything Ukraine defends: democracy, sovereignty, and Ukrainian way of life.

In March 2022, the Department for Education displayed the Ukrainian flag. The then Conservative Party Education Minister, Nadim Zahawi, addressed a conference of school principals in Birmingham, stating that the Ukrainian flag flies over the Department for Education because they stand shoulder to shoulder with all Ukrainians against the 'barbaric, criminal invasion of their sovereign, democratic country.'

On October 19, 2023, following the Hamas attack on Israel and the start of Gaza bombings, the Department for Education published a statement emphasizing that the UK unequivocally condemns these terrorist acts and stands in solidarity with Israel in times of need.

Commenting on Powell's remarks on the social media platform X, political consultant Gary Spedding noted that the Department for Education itself possesses promotional materials showing children in schools waving the Ukrainian flag. Journalist Barry Malone, who previously helped read in a London school, saw Ukrainian flags there and suggested that this policy arose from one specific geopolitical event, and people are smart enough to recognize such manipulations.

Many other users on X also accused the government of hypocrisy.
