Actress Christina Applegate stated that she was mistakenly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, the symptoms of which doctors attributed to her condition since 2021.
The actress, who received an Emmy nomination and became famous in the late 1980s for her role in the sitcom 'Married... with Children,' shared that she continues to experience debilitating symptoms, and realizing the diagnostic error has brought her back to the beginning of her journey.
Applegate discussed this difficult experience on the latest episode of her podcast 'MeSsy.' She shared this with co-host Jamie Lynn Sigler, known from the series 'The Sopranos,' who herself has lived with multiple sclerosis for over two decades.
Sigler previously hosted the podcast solo while Applegate struggled with health issues, including prolonged hospitalization.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune neurodegenerative disease affecting nearly three million people worldwide, and its diagnosis can be challenging, leading to errors in one out of five cases.
Previously, Applegate described difficulties with walking, balance problems, as well as loss of coordination and numbness in her limbs. However, she noted that the initial diagnosis provided certainty and direction for further action, whereas the lack of explanation for her symptoms forced her to search for answers again.
Applegate recounted: 'It's hard to say, but she came into my room and said, 'Congratulations, you do not have multiple sclerosis.' I wasn't happy at all. Everyone else was so happy.'
Despite this, the actress admitted: 'I still have to use a wheelchair when I go to the doctor's office. I cannot walk from the car to the room. I am still in this.'
