Bhuvneshwar Kumar to feature in T20 in Christchurch after long break

The experienced fast bowler of the Indian team, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, will once again take to the field for India after a long wait. The first match of the five T20 games between India and New Zealand is scheduled for October 22 (Thursday) in Christchurch. Kumar has been included in the starting lineup.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar last played an international T20 match for India in November 2022 against New Zealand, after which he was unable to return to the squad. He was named in the starting XI of the Indian team on October 17, 2026, in the fifth T20 match held at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore against West India, after 1425 days. At that time, he was replaced by Mayank Yadav. Now he will play after 1430 days away.

Despite Kumar's return, fans were unable to see him in action as rain spoiled the atmosphere of the match in Bangalore. As a result of the rain, the fifth T20 match was shortened to nine overs, but the game continued for only 7.4 overs before being abandoned without a definitive result. Thus, although Kumar returned, he did not get the opportunity to feature as a bowler.

A key factor contributing to Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return was his impressive performance in the IPL. Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), he accumulated a total of 45 wickets over the last two IPL seasons. In the 2026 season, he took 28 wickets.

The Indian squad included Sandeep Samson (wicketkeeper), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Verma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Diara, Akshar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshadip Singh, and Mayank Yadav. The New Zealand squad consisted of Finn Allen, Tim Seifert (wicketkeeper), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Bevan Jackson, Michael Bresshaw, Mitchell Santner (captain), Nathan Smith, Matt Henry, and Edmead Milne.

India's squad for the T20I match in Hyderabad: changes expected in the lineup

The fourth match of the five-match T20I series between India and West Indies will take place in Hyderabad on Wednesday, October 14. The Indian team leads the series 2-1, and after winning the third match in Indore, the team aims to strengthen its advantage. Meanwhile, the West Indies team is trying to get back into the game and level the score.

In the presumed starting lineup for India, Sanju Samson might start alongside Abhishek Sharma. In that case, young player Vaibhav Suryavanshi is likely to remain on the bench again. Sanju will also play as a batter-bowler. Ishan Kishan could feature at number three in the attack, and captain Shreyas Iyer at number four.

Tilak Verma, Naman Dheer, and Nitish Kumar Reddy are expected to bolster the middle order. This match will be particularly important for Tilak, as he is a local resident of Hyderabad. Regarding bowling, Axar Patel might play alongside Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, and Arshdeep Singh. The decision made in Indore to bring in an extra fast bowler instead of Kuldeep Yadav might be retained by the coaching staff. Thus, Vaibhav is likely to sit on the bench again, and Sanju Samson will start the game once more.

The pitch in Hyderabad is known for producing big scores. Over the last two years in the IPL, scores such as 310, 297, 286, and 277 have been recorded here. Four of the top eight scores in T20 cricket in India were achieved on this very ground. Although the pitch has recently been restored, batters still have good chances of scoring runs.

The situation for bowlers might become complicated if dew falls. According to meteorological department forecasts, there is no probability of the match being washed out due to rain. In six matches played in this tour, only one was won by the defending team. India achieved such a result in Indore.

The team hopes the pitch will offer some assistance to the bowlers so that even if they lose the toss and have to bat first, they can defend their score.

An exciting confrontation is anticipated in this match between Abhishek Sharma and West Indies spinner Roston Chase. Chase played a crucial role in the victory over India in Ranchi. He took wickets from Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer. He uses a hard length and yorker, bowling over the top against left-handed batters.

Nevertheless, in Indore, Abhishek brilliantly countered Chase. After checking the ball in the first over, he occupied his position and hit two sixteenths and one fourth off Chase's deliveries. Against Chase, Abhishek scored 25 runs off 13 balls, losing his wicket twice. Hyderabad is Abhishek's home IPL ground.

Abhishek is the batter who fastest reached 2000 runs in T20 International, achieving it in 1024 balls and breaking the previous record of 1164 balls.

Furthermore, Naman Dheer has five international wickets, all taken immediately after the sixteenth over.

The West Indies team will be concerned about the condition of Romario Shepherd, who sustained an injury during the Ranchi game. Although he played in that game, he was excluded from the squad in Indore. In Ranchi, he scored 34 not out runs off 13 balls.

Presumed West Indies squad: Shy Hope (bowler, captain), Kamil Purran, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd/Quentin Samson, Roston Chase, Sharf Springer, Kimo Paul, Sharf Joseph, and Gudakesh Motie.

Presumed India squad: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (bowler), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Verma, Naman Dheer, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, and Arshdeep Singh.

India plans squad changes for Indore T20 match; possible team lineup

The third match of the five-match T20 tournament between India and West Indies will take place on October 11th at Holkar Stadium in Indore. The game is scheduled to start at 19:00 Indian time. This match could be decisive for the series, which has reached a tense point.

After the second T20, which ended with West Indies defeating India by 6 wickets, the series is tied at 1-1. The team, led by Shreyas Iyer, aims to win the upcoming confrontation.

The debut of 15-year-old young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi at home ground is also being actively discussed, but his participation seems unlikely for now. Head coach Gautam Gambhir previously stated after the second T20 that the team might make adjustments to the middle order depending on circumstances, while wanting to maintain stability in the top order. Therefore, it is likely difficult to rule out the duo of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who are currently in good form, and the management will likely give them more opportunities. This means Vaibhav will have to wait.

Regarding the squad, Indian players who played in Ranchi were unable to effectively contain the aggressive batsmen of the West Indies. Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Naman Diar proved very costly in the match. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav are expected to retain their positions. However, Shivam Dube's performance in the second T20 was not outstanding, so there is a possibility of including Nitish Kumar Reddy instead of him in the starting XI. Nevertheless, the final decision will be made considering the pitch conditions and team strategy.

For their part, the West Indies team under the leadership of Guy Holder may refrain from significant changes to their starting lineup after the victory. In Ranchi, the team scored 250 runs, leaving nine wickets in hand. The brilliant play of Guy Holder and Sherfane Rutherford exposed weaknesses in the Indian bowling. The task for the West Indies is to maintain this aggressive momentum. Thus, for India, the challenge is not only to score a high total in attack but also to demonstrate better control in defense.

A possible Indian lineup for the third T20 includes: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (as wicketkeeper-batsman), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Verma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Diar, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mayank Yadav.

The projected West Indies lineup for the third T20: Guy Holder (captain/wicketkeeper-batsman), Kamil Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Romario Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie, Shar Springer, Akil Hussain, and Shar Joseph.

The Indian squad includes: Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (as wicketkeeper-batsman), Shreyas Iyer (captain), Ishan Kishan, Tilak Verma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Diar, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, and Kuldeep Yadav.
