Vastu Rules: What is undesirable to build under the stairs according to beliefs?

In modern compact dwellings, people often use the free space under the stairs to arrange various areas, such as a kitchen, a place of worship, or a bathroom. However, Vastu Shastra has specific rules regarding the use of this area. According to Vastu beliefs, constructing certain objects in this location can negatively affect the energy and tranquility of the home.

There are recommendations on what to avoid when building under the stairs. Vastu advises against creating places that require prolonged stay, conducting religious rituals, or engaging in work related to fire or water. Specifically, there is a strong recommendation not to place three types of rooms under the stairs.

According to Vastu principles, it is inadmissible to build a temple or a place of worship under the stairs, as this is considered inauspicious. It is believed that a prayer area should be quiet and sacred, whereas the stairs are constantly used by people. Therefore, it is recommended instead to allocate a separate, clean space in the house. In Vastu tradition, the most suitable place for worship is Ishan Kon, which is the northeast corner.

It is also not recommended to set up a kitchen or cooking area under the stairs. The kitchen is associated with the element of fire, while the space under the stairs is viewed as a heavy and pressurized zone. It is especially advised to avoid placing the main cooking area or a gas stove under the stairs. Many modern Vastu guides also warn against building a kitchen in such a location.

Furthermore, from a Vastu perspective, it is undesirable to place a toilet or bathroom under the stairs. A conflict arises in Vastu regarding the combination of water, drainage, and the massive structure of the stairs in one point. Even with limited space in the house, before building a bathroom, practical aspects such as its location, ventilation, and drainage must be considered. Vastu beliefs also advise against toilets under the stairs.

If this space needs to be utilized, a closed storage unit or a useful cabinet for storing ordinary household items can be arranged. It is important to keep this area clean and organized. Old, damaged, or useless items should not be stored here for long periods. Regarding shoe storage, Vastu experts have differing opinions, so it is best to consider this issue based on the direction of the house and the overall layout of the room.

Maintaining Cleanliness and Lighting in the Stairwell

Besides Vastu requirements, from a practical standpoint, the space under the stairs should not be dark, damp, or cluttered with junk. Good lighting and adequate ventilation make this area more functional and safe. The accumulation of broken or unnecessary items quickly leads to disorder. In Vastu beliefs, placing stairs in the south, southwest, and west directions is considered favorable, while building stairs in the northeast direction or in the center of the house, known as Brahmastan, is not recommended.
