SAP's recruitment drive exceeds 150 thousand registrations in less than a day

The South African Police Service (SAPS) recorded 156,131 profiles registered nationwide in less than 24 hours after opening applications for 5,500 entry-level police cadet vacancies for the 2026 and 2027 financial years.

The online recruitment portal opened at midnight on Wednesday, and applications will be accepted until November 13.

A Call to Youth

SAPS National Press Secretary, Colonel Amanda van Wyk, urged young South Africans under the age of 35 to take part in this challenge and join the police service. She stated that out of the 156,131 people who registered profiles, 78,473 completed the profile verification process.

Colonel van Wyk added that another 53,716 people started filling out applications, and 29,013 successfully completed and submitted their documents through the online portal. Given the high traffic, she advised potential candidates to be patient when using the portal and completing forms. Furthermore, she strongly recommends that all applicants ensure they meet all requirements and apply before the deadline.

Candidates with no criminal record or current criminal charges can apply through the official SAPS eRecruitment portal.

How to Apply for SAPS Cadet Positions

The online application process, implemented in 2025, aims to simplify access to entry-level positions for youth from various social backgrounds. Applicants must create a profile on the portal and confirm their accounts using a code sent to their email address. After verification, they can follow step-by-step instructions to apply for available cadet positions, according to van Wyk. Additionally, a QR code for direct access to the portal will be posted on SAPS' official social media pages.

Van Wyk emphasized that the service is looking for more than just people to wear uniforms. It is interested in young individuals who can bring knowledge, skills, fresh ideas, and a drive for excellence to crime fighting.

Graduates Can Be Considered for Specialized Units

As part of the targeted recruitment campaign, SAPS plans to identify suitable candidates with special skills for consideration in specialized police structures. Colonel van Wyk specified that graduates in fields such as law, policing, criminology, law enforcement, forensic science, and information technology may be considered for placement in the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), known as Hawks, as well as in Detective and Forensic Services and the Crime Fighting Unit.

The recruitment process will also aim to find suitable young people from underrepresented racial groups who meet the established requirements.

Selection and Training Process

Van Wyk reported that all applicants will undergo a thorough selection process, which includes physical fitness tests, psychometric assessments, integrity checks, medical examinations, and interviews. These evaluations are designed to ensure that selected officers possess the physical endurance, mental resilience, discipline, and honesty necessary to protect and serve the citizens of South Africa.

Successfully recruited cadets with qualifications at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 6 or higher will undergo six months of training at the SAPS training academy. Those without such qualifications will complete a standard nine-month training program. All police cadets will receive a monthly allowance of 5,000 South African Rand during their training.

Colonel van Wyk concluded that joining SAPS is more than just a career choice; it is a decision to confront crime, protect vulnerable people, support communities, and contribute to a safer future for all residents of South Africa. She urged interested parties to apply in advance and ensure compliance with all stipulated requirements.

SAPS warns applicants about recruitment scams. The service stressed that applying is free and that no police cadet position is sold. It cautioned applicants against scammers who may demand money in exchange for employment or promise to influence the recruitment process.
