Thursday Weather Forecast: Heatwave Continues in the North, Rain Expected in West and East Cape

In South Africa, hot or very hot weather is forecast for several northern provinces on Thursday. At the same time, cloudy and cooler weather with precipitation and rain is expected in parts of the Western and Eastern Cape.

The South African Weather Service has also warned of an extremely high risk of fire danger in the Limpopo, Free State, Northern Cape, and North West Cape regions.

The wave of persistently high temperatures, which is a sign of heat, is expected to continue in the Limpopo Western Bushveld until Friday.

Hot Weather to Persist in Gauteng

Gauteng is expected to have clear and warm weather on Thursday, which will then transition to hot or very hot in the northern part. The Ultraviolet Radiation (UVB) index is forecast to be very high.

Mpumalanga province is expected to have clear and warm to hot weather, with some areas experiencing very high temperatures. Limpopo is forecast to be clear and warm to very hot.

Conditions in the North West Cape will be clear, windy, and warm to hot. In the south of the Free State, partly cloudy conditions are expected, while the rest of the province will be clear and warm to hot.

The Northern Cape will be cloudy or partly cloudy in the west and south, while the rest of the province will be clear and warm to hot. Light to moderate southwesterly winds are expected along the coast.

Rain Expected in the Western Cape

The Western Cape is expected to be cloudy or partly cloudy, with cool or warm temperatures and isolated showers and rain, except for the northeastern parts of the province, where it will be partly cloudy.

The precipitation forecast indicates a 30% chance of showers in some parts of the province, while some southern coastal areas may receive more extensive rainfall, as noted on the South African Weather Service's precipitation map with a 60% probability.

Winds along the western and southwestern coast will be moderate or fresh in the morning, blowing from west to northwest, and in other coastal areas, they will become fresh or strong from the west. The UVB index is forecast to be very high.

Eastern Cape to Experience Cool and Cloudy Weather

The western half of the Eastern Cape is forecast to have partly cloudy skies in the north, while the rest will be cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and rain. Scattered showers are expected along the coast west of Gqeberha.

The eastern half of the province will be partly cloudy in the north escarpment, while the rest of the territory will be cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and thunderstorms.

Fresh or strong southwesterly winds are expected along parts of the Western and Eastern Cape coasts, although the wind may be lighter in some areas in the morning.

Afternoon Showers

KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal is expected to have fog over the eastern interior in the morning, followed by partly cloudy and warm to hot weather. Cloud cover will increase in the afternoon, bringing isolated showers and thunderstorms to some parts of the province, except for the northwestern areas.

Winds along the coast will be light in the morning, blowing from south to southwest, and later will become moderate, blowing from east to southeast. A moderate UVB index is forecast.

Extremely High Fire Danger Risk Forecast

Meteorologists have warned that an extremely high risk of fire danger is expected in the Limpopo, Free State, Northern Cape, and North West Cape regions. Residents in affected areas are strongly advised to exercise caution, especially where hot, dry, and windy conditions could promote the spread of wildfires.

Residents of South Africa are preparing for a weekend with contrasting weather conditions: many parts of the country are expected to experience hot or very hot temperatures, while several provinces are forecast to see isolated showers and thunderstorms, and rain is expected along the West Cape coast.

The South African Weather Service reported that on Saturday, most inland areas will be characterized by clear and hot weather, with the heatwave persisting in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga.

Residents in areas affected by the heat have been advised to take necessary precautions, as extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in extensive central inland areas and other regions.

Saturday in Gauteng is expected to bring partly cloudy and warm or hot weather, with isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the south. A very high UV index is forecast.

In Mpumalanga, the weather will be clear and warm or hot, transitioning to partly cloudy in the afternoon, with isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern Highveld. Very hot or extreme heat conditions are expected in some Lowveld areas, while Limpopo will be clear and warm or very hot.

North West and Free State will also experience hot or very hot weather, with isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms expected as cloud cover increases. Windy weather is forecast in the western parts of both provinces.

The meteorological service warned that extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in most central inland areas, much of northern KwaZulu-Natal, Lowveld areas of Mpumalanga, the Limpopo valley, and the Western Bushveld.

A heatwave with persistently high temperatures is expected in some areas of the northern territories of the Eastern Cape and northern KwaZulu-Natal until Saturday, as well as in some Highveld areas of Mpumalanga and southern Lowveld areas of Mpumalanga until Monday.
