The rugby club Lions confirmed that player Hyron Andrews died from aortic dissection, most likely caused by an aortic aneurysm. This was determined after an autopsy conducted by French authorities.
In a statement released on behalf of the Andrews family, the Lions Rugby company reported that the autopsy showed the 31-year-old athlete died due to an aortic rupture, which led to significant blood accumulation around the heart.
French authorities described the cause of death as 'aortic rupture (natural causes), which led to significant blood accumulation within the cavity surrounding the heart.'
Despite the mourning, the Lions team continued the match, losing 31-14 in an emotionally charged encounter where players paid tribute to their deceased teammate. Captain Franke Horn laid Andrew's number 5 on the field before the match following a minute of silence.
The situation became even more touching due to the sympathy from the La Rochelle club, whose players, management, and fans supported the grieving Lions. The French club offered support after Andrews' death, and the home crowd welcomed the Lions players during training and saw them off after the game.
Currently, Andrews' body is under the care of French authorities until details of his repatriation to South Africa are determined. Lions stated that the return timeline has not yet been established.
The statement also emphasized: 'The Andrews family asks for respect, privacy, and patience during this difficult period while the repatriation process begins.' Lions added that they will provide further information as it becomes available and after consulting with the family.
