Cape 1000 Rally from South Africa Nominated in List of Best Rallies of 2026

The Cape 1000 Rally has received significant recognition from the jury of the International Historic Motoring Awards, elevating this event to an international level. The rally was included in the 'Rally or Tour of the Year' category at the 2026 ceremony.

This international recognition places South Africa's flagship event alongside the most respected global showcases of historic automotive technology. Judges selected this event due to its unique regularity format, carefully curated vehicles, and picturesque routes winding through the Western Cape. Winners receive official recognition during a formal ceremony held at The Peninsula London hotel.

Cape 1000 celebrates the heritage and passion for classic cars. Launched in 2022 and organized by Private Clients with support from Old Mutual, the rally is a five-day automotive journey demanding high precision from drivers. Approximately seventy rare and collectible vehicles participate, divided into four categories: Classic, Modern Classic, Sports Cars, and Special or Recreational Participants.

The strict regularity format requires participants to maintain specified time intervals on challenging mountain passes and coastal roads without exceeding established speed limits. Beyond showcasing automotive skill and the appeal of a luxurious lifestyle, the event raises substantial funds for local charities. Recent editions have successfully raised over 300,000 South African Rand (R300,000) for the Motorsport Legends Charity Fund and the South African QuadPara Association.

Organizers combine first-class service with grassroots philanthropy, ensuring that this prestigious showcase benefits local communities and injured motorsport veterans. CAR magazine serves as the official media partner for the Cape 1000 Rally. In the current event, editor Jan McLaren participated in a drive in a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda.

Planning for Cape 1000 in 2027 has already begun

The next edition is scheduled for March 20-25, 2027. The event will commence on Saturday with a public 'Show and Shine' exhibition at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, allowing local enthusiasts to view the rare exhibits before the cars depart for Franschhoek and Overberg. Registration for next year is already open.

The rally organizers assert that this global recognition enhances South Africa's tourism and automotive profile, confirming that local events meet international standards. Event Director Vanessa Crichton stated: 'Being on the international shortlist alongside the greatest historic automotive events in the world is a proud moment for Cape 1000 and for South Africa.' She added that the goal was to create a rally capable of competing on the world stage through exceptional vehicles, unusual roads, and a genuine charitable mission. 'This recognition belongs to our participants, partners, and beneficiaries, and it cements Cape Town on the map for classic motorsport lovers everywhere.'
