South African bowler breaks Dale Steyn's 18-year record by hitting the ball

The South African off-spinner, Simon Harmer, achieved a remarkable feat in the second match of the series against Australia, entering history books. Harmer scored an impressive 82 runs, thereby breaking Dale Steyn's 18-year record.

He reached this result at a time when the South African team was in a difficult situation and desperately needed a big partnership. On Tuesday, the third day of the match played at Centurion Park in Gqeberha, Harmer faced 91 deliveries, scoring 10 fours and one six.

This figure is the highest for a South African batsman batting at number 9 or lower against Australia in Test matches. The previous record was 76 runs, set by Dale Steyn during a match in Melbourne in 2008.

In the first innings, South Africa lost six wickets for 110 runs. Following this, captain Temba Bavuma and Marco Jansen stabilized the game, adding 132 runs for the seventh wicket. Jansen departed after scoring 85 runs, after which Harmer supported Bavuma. Both players formed a crucial partnership on the eighth wicket, accumulating 183 runs.

This is the second-largest partnership on the eighth wicket or lower in South African history. The record is currently held by Marco Boucher and Pete Symcox, who scored 195 runs against Pakistan in 1998.

For his part, captain Temba Bavuma demonstrated exceptional patience and technique under pressure, scoring 179 runs off 334 balls, including 18 fours and one six. When the team score was only 12 runs with two wickets down on the first day, Bavuma took responsibility and prevented the innings from collapsing.

Simon Harmer had the opportunity to earn his first hundred in Test matches, but Marnus Labuschagne dismissed him. After South Africa fell victim to Mitchell Starc, they declared the innings closed at 425/9. By the end of the third day, Australia had scored three runs for the loss of one wicket. Kagiso Rabada dismissed Nick Maddinson, preventing him from scoring any runs.

Temba Bavuma played a historic innings against Australia, inspired by Sachin Tendulkar's technique

South African captain Temba Bavuma pulled his team out of a crisis by playing the biggest innings of his career during the Haykeburgh match against Australia. He scored 179 runs in the first innings for South Africa, demonstrating that technique and patience are more important for excellent play than height.

The situation was critical: South Africa lost six batsmen at a score of 110 runs. Under these conditions, Bavuma, along with Marco Jansen, added 132 runs for the seventh wicket. After Jansen's dismissal, Simon Harmer supported him, and together they scored 183 runs for the eighth wicket. Thus, South Africa declared the first innings with a total score of 425/9.

During this marathon innings, Temba Bavuma faced 334 deliveries. His innings included 18 fours and one six. Bavuma, who is about 5 feet 4 inches tall, showed remarkable composure against fast bowlers such as Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, and Pat Cummins.

Temba Bavuma stated that he tries to follow Sachin Tendulkar's playing technique. He noted that since he is not tall, he prefers to keep the ball close to his body instead of taking big strides. According to him, this approach proves effective for him, although it sometimes creates difficulties.

Sachin Tendulkar has impressive statistics against the Australian team: he scored 3630 runs in 39 Tests with an average of 55.00. Bavuma also shows consistent performance against the Kangaroos, with an average of 45.17 against this team. Overall, Temba Bavuma's Test average is 38.76, but it rises to 54.36 when he is captain. Against Australia, he has already scored five half-centuries and one century. Among his recent significant innings are an unbeaten 95 in Cape Town and 66 runs scored during the World Test Championship final at Lord's.

Matthew Hayden breaks Brian Lara's record in Test cricket, scoring 380 runs

There are matches in the history of Test cricket that are remembered for many years. One such event was the historic innings played by former Australian opener Matthew Hayden.

Twenty-three years ago, on October 10th, in the Perth Test against Zimbabwe, Hayden caused a sensation by scoring 380 runs. This incredible performance allowed him to break Brian Lara's record for the highest score in the history of Test cricket.

In this landmark innings, Hayden hit 38 fours and 11 sixes. He spent about ten hours at the crease, demonstrating powerful batting against the Zimbabwean bowlers. His shots, which included magnificent cut shots, straight drives, and powerful pull shots, were so impressive that the bowlers could not find a way to stop him.

When Matthew Hayden walked onto the field in this confrontation, hardly anyone could have imagined that he would enter the golden annals of Test cricket. After scoring 183 not out runs on the second day, Hayden continued his aggressive style the next day and soon surpassed the 300-run mark.

According to data, Hayden scored 380 runs off 437 balls, hitting 38 fours and 11 sixes. One Zimbabwean player described this innings as: 'It felt like he was hitting the barn door!'

Prior to this, the record for the highest score in Test cricket belonged to the legendary West Indian batsman, Brian Lara. Lara reached 375 runs against England in 1994. Hayden set a new record by scoring 380 runs off 437 balls.

Australia achieved a significant victory in this match. Zimbabwe, having won the toss, chose to bat first. Australia posted a substantial total of 735/6d in the first innings. Australian captain Steve Waugh (78) and Damien Martyn (53) both scored half-centuries.

For Zimbabwe, Sean Ervine took the most wickets, claiming 4. Zimbabwe's reply finished at 239 runs. In the second innings, Australia also dismissed Zimbabwe for 321 runs. Australia secured this historic victory by one innings and 175 runs.

In this momentous match, Australian batsman and wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist also displayed excellent play. He scored a hundred runs off just 84 balls, further strengthening the Australian innings. Nevertheless, Gilchrist's innings looked pale compared to Hayden's 380 runs. Matthew Hayden was named 'Player of the Match' for his stunning performance.

After Hayden set the record, Brian Lara himself called him to congratulate him. However, Hayden's record did not last long. Approximately six months later, in April 2004, Lara broke the record for the highest score in Test cricket again, scoring 400* not out against England. Hayden's 380-run innings is still considered one of the most unforgettable in the history of Test cricket.

Sanju Samson scores a half-century off 21 balls in Ranchi, matching Virat Kohli's record

During the second T20 series match between India and West Indies, held in Ranchi on Friday (October 9), Sanju Samson demonstrated an outstanding performance with the bat. Samson, who scored only 11 runs in the first match of the series, managed to score a half-century off just 21 balls in this game. This marked the fastest half-century by an Indian player against the West Indies in a T20 International match.

Virat Kohli had previously set a similar record, reaching fifty runs off 21 balls at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in 2019. Sanju Samson's aggressive performance also positively impacted the start of the Indian team. During the powerplay, India scored 79 runs while losing one batsman, which is the highest total in the powerplay against the West Indies in T20 International history. Previously, the Indian team had scored 72 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in 2019 without losing any batsmen.

In Samson's innings, aggression was accompanied by luck. He avoided being dismissed for a personal score of six runs when he was caught in the third over. He then received another chance and scored 42 runs. These errors allowed the West Indies to face consequences. Samson completed his half-century by hitting the fourth boundary off Romario Shepherd's delivery in the sixth over.

He achieved this milestone by hitting two consecutive boundaries off just 21 balls. In total, Sanju Samson scored 82 runs off 41 balls, including 9 fours and 4 sixes. His attacking style forced the West Indies players to be under pressure from the beginning of the game.

Indian captain Shreyas Iyer decided to start the game despite losing the toss. Samson and Abhishek Sharma started the innings, adding 42 runs in four overs while losing the first batsman. Abhishek scored 20 runs off 12 balls, but even after his dismissal, Samson did not slow down the scoring rate. After that, he continued to accumulate runs with Ishan Kishan, and Samson's quick start allowed the team to reach a high score.

West Indies captain Shy Hap chose a strategy of starting the game with the visiting team, deciding that the situation with dew might become more complicated as the evening progressed. Gudakesh Motie was included in the squad, while India made no changes to its starting lineup. Samson's half-century off 21 balls not only matched Virat Kohli's record but also set a new benchmark for India's performances in the powerplay against the West Indies.
