BBC plans to close three TV and radio channels due to financial difficulties

The BBC announced on Tuesday its intention to close its television channels BBC Three and BBC Scotland in the spring. This decision is part of the corporation's efforts to achieve savings of £500 million (equivalent to US$669 million) over two years.

Both mentioned services will be transformed into an online format. This means they will continue to create and broadcast some content via the iPlayer platform, eliminating the need to fill a terrestrial television schedule.

Furthermore, the BBC announced the closure of the radio station Radio 4 Extra, which primarily broadcasts archived BBC programs, including documentaries, dramas, and comedies.

BBC Director-General Matt Brittain stated that this decision was made in response to 'immediate cost pressures,' adding that 'we all know what this means is a difficult choice.'

Director of BBC Scotland Hayley Valentine emphasized that amid serious financial problems, resources must be focused where they will have the greatest impact on the audience.
