Expert advises Vaibhav Suryawanshi not to limit himself to scoring runs, but to pass the test of patience

For Vaibhav Suryawanshi, simply scoring runs is not enough; he now has a test to undergo. Despite an impressive performance in the IPL and global discussion of his name at the age of 15, his place in the Indian team's starting eleven remains uncertain.

Before this talented player lies not only the task of scoring runs with the bat but also accepting the wait that is inherent in the career of any talented athlete. In cricket, sometimes the toughest confrontation does not happen against bowlers, but in the state of waiting for one's chance and preparing for it. Vaibhav Suryawanshi is currently experiencing exactly such a situation.

Everyone expects this young player, who made a sensation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), to demonstrate brilliant play in the Indian national team jersey. However, in the world of international cricket, besides talent, patience, the right moment, and understanding the team's needs are extremely important.

Former Indian cricketer Murali Karthik advised viewing Vaibhav's current situation from this perspective. Karthik's message was clear: a player should not be excluded from the starting lineup just because another player with more captivating talent appears. Although this may be difficult for Vaibhav to hear, he will have to face this reality in the fight for a spot in the Indian team.

Murali Karthik noted: 'It will be unpleasant, but you must accept the bitter truth. Maybe he won't like it. Maybe for some time he won't like it, but it is the truth. You must accept it and move on.'

This comment does not question Vaibhav's talent, but rather points to the selection process in international cricket, where even with good play, players are not always immediately given a permanent spot. Achieving records in the IPL and securing a place in the Indian starting eleven are two different challenges.

After Vaibhav raised expectations so high with his batting, it is natural that he wants to see himself in every match. Nevertheless, the team management must consider not only the potential of the young player but also the performances of the current players and the overall team tactics.

Currently, the Indian team faces a major question regarding the opening lineup. The team management has already tested batsmen such as Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Both were part of the Indian team aiming to win the T20 World Cup 2026. Thus, the decision to drop experienced players just for Vaibhav will not be an easy step.

Karthik also emphasized this. He stated: 'I am not one to change things for the sake of change. Changes happen constantly, but there must be a valid reason behind them. As for the opening pair of the Indian team, I know their play was somewhat inconsistent, but this pair helped you win matches.'

His argument hides an important aspect: a player's poor performance in some matches does not mean they should be immediately replaced by another. The team management must also consider what contribution this player has made previously and how important their role is to the team's strategy.

This is why Vaibhav's path will open not only by scoring big runs. He needs to remain constantly ready, waiting for his chance. It will be important to seize any opportunity and prove his usefulness to the selectors.

Murali Karthik compared Vaibhav's situation to that of Yashasvi Jaiswal. He meant that in limited-overs cricket, it is not easy to secure a regular position, even as a talented opening batsman, especially when there are established players in the team.

This comparison serves as an important lesson for Vaibhav. In cricket, talent can get a player into discussions, but circumstances matter for determining their place in the team. Sometimes the team composition hinders, sometimes the performance of other players. In such cases, waiting might not be the end of a career, but a difficult stage.

Karthik also mentioned that captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir are likely discussing this issue with Vaibhav. According to him, Vaibhav is not excluded from the team's plans. However, when other players perform well, the young cricketer has to wait for his chance.

Another aspect on Vaibhav's path is Sanju Samson's recent game. Sanju, who was the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup 2026, scored half-centuries in the last ten matches. His performance in the series against West Indies also strengthened his position in the team.

The presence of options like Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan also means the Indian team is not lacking options for the top and middle order. Under these conditions, Vaibhav may have to wait for changes in the squad or a decline in the performance of some established player to secure a permanent spot.

Nevertheless, this does not mean Vaibhav's chances are over. How he performed at the age of 15...

New Zealand Captain Discusses Potential of Young Indian Player Vaibhav Suryavanshi Ahead of T20 Series

New Zealand captain Michelle Santner highly praised the aggressive play of young Indian player Vaibhav Suryavanshi, noting that he would be difficult to stop if given the opportunity to play in the five-match T20 series. Nevertheless, the New Zealand team has prepared its strategy against this 15-year-old athlete. The first match of the T20 series between India and New Zealand will take place on Thursday.

Since being included in the Indian squad for the tour of England, Vaibhav has been given a limited number of playing minutes. The main reason for this was the outstanding performance of regular batsman Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Previously, in the last T20 series against the West Indies, Vaibhav also failed to make the starting lineup.

At the press conference before the series, Santner commented on Vaibhav's game, stating that the New Zealand team is well acquainted with his abilities and has developed a corresponding tactic. He emphasized that even though Vaibhav did not participate in the last series, they know what a good player he is because they have seen his performances in the IPL. Santner added that Vaibhav has a chance to play an important role in the Indian team, both in this series and in the future.

He continued that he had observed what he is capable of doing if given a chance in the current series, and noted that he was quite difficult to stop. Santner recalled how bowlers in England often used short balls against Indian batsmen, and also saw in the IPL how aggressively Vaibhav can play. He assured that they have certain plans in case he takes the field.

Santner also shared his opinion on the return of experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the Indian T20 team after almost four years away. The New Zealand captain believes that the conditions in New Zealand might suit Bhuvneshwar, who masterfully controls spin and movement in the air. Santner suggested that Bhuvneshwar could benefit if the pitch slightly assists the ball, noting that he also made the ball spin on flat Indian surfaces. He added that on a new ball, he could become a serious problem for New Zealand batsmen.

He mentioned that in India, T20 matches often end with large scores and easy chases. Santner stated that conditions for bowlers in India have become difficult, whereas in New Zealand, Bhuvneshwar might face more favorable conditions.

Santner hopes that bowling dominance will prevail in the T20 series. However, he acknowledged that conditions can change rapidly depending on the pitch and weather. He suggested that bowlers might gain an advantage in the first match, while the reuse of the same ground in the second match could ease the batting for the batsmen. Therefore, both teams will have to change their strategy according to changing circumstances.

Santner called the Indian team strong, noting that Team India has been performing well for a long time. Nevertheless, he reminded that the bouncy pitches in New Zealand will differ from home conditions for Indian players. He also mentioned that India recently defeated New Zealand in a T20 series by a score of 4-1. Following the five T20 matches between India and New Zealand, there will also be five ODI matches and two Tests. According to Santner, under a tight schedule and constantly changing circumstances, both teams will need to effectively utilize their entire squad to achieve good results.

Yuzvendra Chahal spoke about a traumatic incident that happened to him during a party in 2013

The left-arm spinner for the Indian team, Yuzvendra Chahal, revealed details of an early career incident that put his life in danger. During a party in Bangalore in 2013, while playing for Mumbai Indians (MI), a drunken Australian cricketer lifted him from the 15th-floor balcony and hung him upside down.

Chahal shared this story on a podcast by former Indian batsman Akash Chopra. He clarified that two cricketers whose names had previously been linked to the incident were not involved. Chahal noted that a very drunk Australian player was present at the party organized by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Bangalore.

According to Chahal, this athlete was physically very strong and suddenly lifted him, hanging him from the balcony. Chahal recounted: 'He just held me by the neck.' People in the room panicked, and everyone immediately intervened to get him back up.

He added that despite the player laughing, it felt like a second chance at life for him. Chahal speculated that the incident took place on the 15th or 16th floor of the hotel. He admitted that in his youth, he did not understand how to officially file a complaint about such an event, and later decided to focus on his career.

Chahal first mentioned this case in 2022. Although Andrew Symonds' name was mentioned in some previous reports, Chahal now categorically denies the involvement of both Symonds and James Franklin. However, he declined to name the Australian cricketer.

Chahal began his IPL career in 2013 with Mumbai Indians and later became a leading bowler for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, playing for the team for eight seasons. He is one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history, with 233 wickets in 188 matches. In the 2026 IPL season, he played 14 matches for Punjab Kings (PBKS), taking 12 wickets.
