Otter.ai raises $320 million to accelerate growth of enterprise artificial intelligence

Otter.ai has secured $320 million in funding from Customer Value Fund of General Catalyst. The Mountain View-based company announced this deal on October 20, 2026. This agreement is intended to support the next phase of the company's expansion into the enterprise sector.

CEO Sam Liang stated that equity investors will not face dilution. These funds can be repaid with interest, although details on this matter have not yet been disclosed. The fund invests in growth projects and receives a stake from potential profit increases.

Otter.ai plans to increase its sales and marketing budget. According to Liang, the company may increase spending twofold or threefold. The funds will be directed towards international development as well as further product refinement.

Otter.ai, which provides AI-based solutions for meetings, was founded in 2016 by Liang and Yun Fu. The platform offers AI tools for meetings, including transcript creation, speaker recognition, and content summarization. Additionally, it highlights action items for tracking follow-up work.

The company reports having over 40 million users, an increase from 25 million the previous year. Otter.ai's technology has reached teams in over 86% of Fortune 500 companies. The company has also recorded over a billion transcribed meetings.

The platform is compatible with video conferencing services such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, allowing users to transcribe meetings from numerous cloud-based applications. Otter.ai claims that time savings due to its product have resulted in customer ROI exceeding $1.5 billion.

However, the company is now moving beyond simple transcription. Its more ambitious product roadmap is designed to automate the conversion of conversations into actionable business data. This, in turn, can free people from routine tasks and allow them to make decisions faster.

With this funding, Otter.ai gains significant capital for growth without needing to dilute its equity. Repayment depends on the success of the funded initiatives. Nevertheless, the financing must still be repaid with interest. The deal structure emphasizes the importance of active customer acquisition. With increased spending, future revenue is expected to be dynamic; poor results could require the company to cover losses without realizing gains.

Otter.ai intends to expand its sales team and scale marketing outside the US. Although the US remains Otter.ai's largest market, Canada, the UK, and India rank second, third, and fourth, respectively. To grow, the company needs to serve businesses across a wide range of countries. The funding will also enable product innovation and the creation of more advanced integrations with enterprise systems.

Otter.ai faces competition from specialized meeting assistants and established technology platforms. Competitors mentioned include Fireflies.ai, Granola, and Read AI. Furthermore, Microsoft, Google, and Zoom offer AI features related to meetings within their broader software ecosystems.

The wider market is trending toward automated workflows. Meeting assistants are increasingly aiming to transform dialogues into tasks, ideas, and business solutions. Otter.ai must demonstrate that its specialized tools provide sufficient value to retain customers.

Another challenge is trust. A class-action lawsuit filed in August 2025 contained allegations regarding consent for meeting recording and recording for AI training. It should be noted that the claims made in the lawsuit are only allegations, not established facts.
