Revolut users experienced difficulties accessing their accounts on Tuesday, the 20th. The technical failure impacted several services of the digital bank, including card payments, transfers, and withdrawals.
The company assured that user data and money remain safe. Although the interruption coincided with issues reported by Google Cloud in the UK, it has not been confirmed whether the two events are connected.
When trying to use the application, customers received error messages and were instructed to try again later, which prevented fund movements for some.
Shortly after 8 am, British summer time, Downdetector registered over 1,500 reports of failures in Revolut's services. The company communicated that part of its operations was inaccessible.
Complaints on social media were not limited to financial transactions; users also reported difficulties in seeking support. In an official statement, Revolut confirmed the incident, assuring: 'We can confirm that all our customers' money and data are safe.'
Revolut apologized for the inconvenience and informed that it was actively working on fixing the problem since it was identified that morning. However, the company did not specify the origin of the outage nor whether customers globally were affected, although the status page indicated that customers in Brazil were also impacted.
During the same morning period, Google Cloud notified problems in multiple services in the europe-west2 region, located in the UK, citing an 'increase in errors and intermittent network failures'. Since Revolut uses Google Cloud infrastructure through a strategic partnership, this connection suggests a possible relationship between the incidents, but does not prove that cloud problems caused the app outage.
Other British banks were also mentioned in the difficulty records. Customers of Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland, both belonging to the Lloyds Banking Group, faced isolated problems with online services.
A spokesperson for Lloyds Bank clarified that the bank's main application was operating normally, despite some customers encountering hurdles with specific digital services. The institution mentioned being aware of similar situations in other companies and monitoring the occurrence.
Revolut has a global base of over 80 million customers and competes with traditional banks by offering services primarily through its application. As of the disclosure, the company had not detailed the cause of the failure nor established a definitive deadline for the full restoration of services.
