Popular Career Options for Generation Z: Internet Earnings and Freedom of Choice

The traditional career in corporate offices with promises of high salary and promotion is no longer the sole measure of success for Generation Z. Many members of this generation prefer to work on their own terms, earning significant sums, for example, by creating content for Instagram Reels.

For Gen Z, a career is now linked not only to a monthly salary but also to the ability to combine earnings with creativity, freedom, and the realization of personal preferences. They consider various fields that allow them to combine income with self-expression.

Creating videos for YouTube, posting on social networks, and Instagram Reels has ceased to be just a hobby; many people earn income precisely through this route. Monetization methods include advertising integrations, partnerships, and brand promotion. According to a 2025 report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), there are between 2 and 2.5 million content creators in India who earn from their content, influencing people's purchasing decisions. Nevertheless, not everyone who creates content can expect a high income.

Instead of daily commutes to the office, some Gen Z members prefer to work for different clients. Freelancing allows them to engage in activities such as copywriting, graphic design, video editing, photography, and social media management. A 2024 study by the Research Institute Upwork showed that 70% of Gen Z freelancers cited flexible working hours as the main reason for their choice. Furthermore, 64% noted the importance of being able to work from anywhere, and 62% mentioned the ability to do work they enjoy. This survey was conducted in the USA.

Another popular option for Gen Z is starting their own business, whether it is a small clothing brand, a home bakery, a vintage shop, or an online business. This path offers the freedom to make decisions and work on one's own ideas. However, launching a business involves financial investments, the need to attract customers, and the risk of losses.

Digital marketing includes building brand awareness on social networks, conducting online campaigns, and collaborating with influencers. This field can become a career for young people interested in the internet and social media.

Working on creating photos and videos for fashion shoots, weddings, travel, and advertising campaigns also attracts young people. This area requires a combination of creative abilities and technical skills.

Young professionals with knowledge in design, technology, marketing, or business can consult various companies and clients. Opportunities open up in this field with experience and strong skills.

According to a 2025 global survey by Deloitte on Gen Z and Millennials, only 6% of Gen Z and Millennials named achieving a managerial position as their primary career goal. The survey also highlighted the importance of work-life balance and opportunities for learning and career growth. This does not mean that Gen Z is completely abandoning corporate work; rather, they strive for positions or professions that provide a good income alongside the freedom to make decisions about their life and work.

Five Skills Gen Z Must Master for Career Growth in Their First Job

The start of any journey, whether it's education, a first job, or an important life decision, is rarely easy; you don't have to be perfect from the start. The same applies to the office life of Generation Z. When they first arrive at work after college, they need time to adapt to the new environment, learn teamwork, and understand their responsibilities. This is a completely natural process. In such conditions, a university degree or theoretical knowledge alone is not enough; mastering a number of key skills is necessary for successful office work and career advancement.

Below are five skills that can help Generation Z succeed in the workplace.

For future career growth, Gen Z will require many competencies, but critical thinking is the most important—the ability to analyze, evaluate, and make informed decisions on any issue. In the current digital age, simply having information is not enough; it is crucial to question received data and not take anything for granted without verification. Although Gen Z has access to a huge amount of information via the internet, they must know how to verify it to form a correct understanding. They should learn to look at any problem from different angles, study evidence, and form their opinion based on facts, instead of reacting impulsively based on emotions, and instead finding thoughtful solutions.

Good communication skills are essential for achieving success in any career—the ability to convey one's thoughts to others in the right way. Generation Z grew up with smartphones and social media, but in the office, it is enough to communicate through messengers or chats. According to a 2023 LinkedIn report, communication was included in the list of most sought-after soft skills valued by companies. Gen Z must master all aspects of communication: from casual conversations to writing professional emails, speaking in meetings, and giving public presentations. Clearly and confidently stating one's position, actively listening to others, and explaining ideas with examples will help them interact better with the team, build relationships, and resolve misunderstandings.

Problem-solving ability is the skill of recognizing a problem, understanding its essence, and finding an appropriate solution. This requires critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills. This skill is useful not only in the office but also in daily life. Gen Z must develop this competence to find a way out in difficult circumstances instead of panicking. This will help them adapt to changes, cope with uncertain situations, and overcome work difficulties.

In the modern digital workspace, digital literacy is critically important for Gen Z—the ability to use digital tools and technologies correctly. This includes not only managing applications and gadgets but also effectively using office software, project management tools, social networks, and cloud services. Furthermore, Gen Z must develop the ability to find information on the internet, check its sources, and identify reliable data.

Today, Gen Z faces issues such as climate change, social changes, pandemics, and digital transformation, which are interconnected. To find solutions to such complex problems, they need to think creatively and collaborate with others. Collaboration means the ability to achieve a common goal together with others. In the office, it is important to establish contact with people who have different views, experiences, and working methods. This promotes more effective teamwork, the emergence of new ideas, and the achievement of set goals. According to a Salesforce survey, 86% of managers and employees believe that lack of interaction or poor communication is the main reason for failures in the office. Therefore, Gen Z must learn to listen to the opinions of others, distribute tasks, and jointly find solutions to problems.

It is natural to spend time learning and understanding everything new at the beginning of a career, and there is nothing wrong with that. Gen Z must realize that career success depends not only on a diploma but also on continuous learning, improving mistakes, and working together with colleagues. These five skills—from critical thinking to collaboration—can help them handle work challenges, demonstrate their abilities, and advance in their careers.
