NSPCA investigates business activity in Johannesburg involved in export of donkey hides

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has expressed concern regarding the activities of a company in Johannesburg that purchases donkey hides for export to East Asia. This concern arose after an investigation conducted by one of the organization's inspectors.

The investigation was initiated after NSPCA learned about an advertisement offering salted donkey hides for export. Inspector Kabelo was able to trace this enterprise and met with one of its directors, who confirmed that the company purchases donkey hides for foreign markets.

During the visit to the premises, no donkeys or hides were found; however, the inspector issued a warning to the company and notified the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD).

Additional Information

NSPCA emphasized that the trade of donkey hides is linked to illegal theft and cruel killing of animals, raising serious concerns about animal welfare and the impact of this activity on communities whose existence depends on donkeys.

Furthermore, NSPCA noted that the advertisement used a photograph of a calm and curious donkey but warned that such an image does not reflect the welfare issues associated with this trade in general.

The organization reiterated that animals are sentient beings, and businesses that keep or use animals are responsible for their humane treatment and respect.

NSPCA reported that it will continue to monitor the activities of this business in Johannesburg, as well as other companies involved in similar operations. The public concerned about animal welfare was advised to contact their local SPCA or NSPCA.
