Eight Mighty Warriors of Ravana's Army Whose Magical Power Intimidated the Gods

When mentioning the great battle from the epic Ramayana, the army of Lord Rama's monkeys and a number of mighty warriors come to the forefront. Among them are names such as Hanuman, Angad, Sugriva, Jambavan, Nal, and Nil. However, the question arises about the number of brave and strong demons in Ravana's army. Goswami Tulsidas mentioned some key warriors of Ravana in his work Ramcharitman.

Below is an overview of the most powerful warriors of Ravana's army.

Kumbhakarna was Ravana's younger brother. In the Ramayana, he is described as a warrior with a huge physique and colossal physical strength. His power was so great that it was not easy to confront him in battle. In Ramcharitman, Goswami Tulsidas writes about Kumbhakarna the following:

Shloka
अतिबल कुंभकरन अस भ्राता।
जेहि कहुँ नहिं प्रतिभट जग जाता।।
करइ पान सोवइ षट मासा।
जागत होइ तिहुँ पुर त्रासा।।

Meaning
These four lines describe Kumbhakarna's exceptional strength. According to Tulsidas, there was no warrior capable of opposing him. He slept for six months, and when he woke up, he caused terror in the three worlds. In the history of the Ramayana, Kumbhakarna is considered one of the strongest warriors in Ravana's army. During the battle, he inflicted significant damage on the monkey army but was ultimately killed by Lord Shri Rama.

Meghanada was Ravana's eldest son and is also known as Indrajit. He defeated the god Indra in battle, after which he received the title Indrajit. He was skilled in using divine attacks and in warfare. Tulsidas describes his exploits in Ramcharitman, writing:

Shloka
बारिदनाद जेठ सुत तासू।
भट महुं प्रथम लीक जग जासू।।
जेहि न होइ रन सनमुख कोई।
सुरपुर नितहिं परावन होई।।

Meaning
Meghanada is described as Ravana's eldest son and a great warrior. His valor was known far and wide. Confronting him on the battlefield was considered difficult, and his attacks caused concern even among the gods. The Ramayana states that Meghanada possessed numerous divine attacks. He put Lord Shri Rama and Lakshmana in a difficult position by using astral powers like Nagapasha. Nevertheless, Lakshmana managed to kill him in battle.

In the Ramayana, Tulsidas also mentions other warriors of Ravana.

Shloka
कुमुख अकंपन कुलिसरद धूमकेतु अतिकाय।
एक एक जग जीति सक ऐसे सुभट निकाय।।

Atikaya was the son of Ravana and his wife Vindhyamalini. He was famous for his exceptional strength and combat skills. Thanks to the blessing received from Brahma, he was difficult to defeat by gods, demons, and humans. However, in battle, Lakshmana destroyed him using divine astras.

Akampan is known for his resilience and magical abilities. He did not panic even in the most difficult circumstances. According to legend, he fought with Hanuman and repeatedly confused the monkey army with his illusionary powers. Akampan advised Ravana that a direct confrontation with Rama in battle was inadvisable, and the abduction of Sita was the only way out.

Kumukha was a powerful demon in Ravana's army, known for his aggressive fighting style and bravery. Given his strength and martial achievements, Ravana included him among the main warriors of his army.

Dhumraketu was a strong demon in Ravana's army. It is said that he confused enemies by creating illusions of fire and smoke, trying to weaken them in battle by luring them into his traps.

Har and Dushan were Ravana's half-brothers and mighty demons. Shurpanakha told them about her sorrow after her nose was cut off. To avenge the insult to his sister, Har and Dushan arrived in Panchavati with a huge army and attacked Lord Rama, Mother Sita, and Lakshmana. Both demons were skilled in handling weapons and were renowned for their strength in battle.

Actor Shahbaz Khan plays Ravana in Ramlila Kadakdum, noting connection to Bollywood

The role of Ravana in the epic Ramayana is a complex challenge for any artist, requiring a powerful voice, weighty dialogues, and the ability to convey deep emotions to the audience. Actor Shahbaz Khan performed this role in the Ramlila at Kadakdum, East Delhi. The audience was greatly impressed by Shahbaz Khan's appearance on stage, given his experience in the film and television industry.

Shahbaz Khan's story extends beyond simply participating in the Ramlila; he has long been part of the world of acting, playing historical characters from Hader Ali on television to various roles in films.

The Hanuman Ramlila is taking place at CBD Ground in Kadakdum, Delhi, running from October 10th to October 20th. Shahbaz Khan participated in portraying Ravana, and his performance generated great enthusiasm among the public.

The performance showcased important plotlines of the Ramayana, such as the Panchavati episode, Sita's abduction, Jatayu's death, and Lord Rama's vow. The scenes of Sita's abduction and Jatayu's battle were particularly noteworthy. Sita's abduction marks a turning point in the Ramayana, when Ravana deceitfully takes Sita away. Jatayu fights him, sustaining serious injuries, after which he informs Lord Rama about the abduction.

Recreating these events on stage presents a challenge for actors, demanding not only acting skill but also the ability to convey emotions to the viewers.

Shahbaz Khan, who played Ravana, has worked in both Indian cinema and television. He was born in Madhya Pradesh, and his father was involved in music. In the world of acting, he has carved out a unique niche, especially through his portrayal of historical and negative roles.

One of the key moments in his career was playing the role of Hader Ali in the series 'The Sword of Tipu Sultan'. Furthermore, he appeared in series such as 'The Great Maratha', 'Chandrakanta', and 'Betaal Pachisi'. Shahbaz Khan also acted in films including 'Major Saab', 'Raju Chacha', 'The Hero: Love Story of a Spy', and 'Agent Vinod'.

Embodying historical and fictional characters in series requires a strong voice, facial expressions, and convincing dialogue delivery. Mentioning Shahbaz Khan's name might remind many viewers of the golden age of historical television series. However, his career cannot be limited solely to villains or historical figures; he has worked in diverse types.

His experience in both television and film has allowed the actor to understand the specific demands of different media. Unlike filming in front of a camera, where the slightest emotion is captured, on an open stage, the actor must use voice and gestures to convey the message to a distant audience.

For Shahbaz Khan, the Ramlila stage was particularly interesting because the story is already ingrained in the consciousness of the viewers. The public evaluates not only how the dialogues are delivered but also how vividly the artist embodies the character.

Shahbaz Khan described the role of Ravana in Kadakdum as both challenging and creatively satisfying. The appeal of the Ravana character lies in the fact that he is not merely an antagonist in the Ramayana. Despite being a powerful king and scholar, he falls due to his own arrogance and decisions. The actor playing this role must understand both the influence and the ultimate outcome of this character.

During the Ramlila, Shahbaz Khan emphasized that it is not just entertainment but also an opportunity to learn about culture, traditions, and social values. He urged parents to bring their children to the Ramlila so that the younger generation can connect with their cultural roots and absorb values such as respect for elders.

According to Vinay Jain, the minister of Hanuman Ramlila, the committee has been organizing this performance in Kadakdum for many years. Measures have been taken to ensure audience safety with support from the Delhi police, including the deployment of volunteers and video surveillance. Seating areas for spectators are also provided.

A unique aspect of the Ramlila is that although the story and characters are old and familiar, the production experience and the actors change every year. This year, Shahbaz Khan plays Ravana in Kadakdum, and his fame is linked not only to this single role but also to his long acting journey in film and television.

Impressive 105-foot Ravana is being prepared in Kota, capable of moving and imitating movements

The upcoming Vijayadashami, or Dussehra, festival in the city of Kota promises to be a very spectacular event. The central element of the celebration will be a giant figure of Ravana over 105 feet tall. A distinctive feature of this Ravana is not just its static nature; it will be able to rotate 360 degrees, hold a sword in its hand, move its mustache, and blink.

Although the size of the Ravana doll this year is slightly smaller compared to last year, it is being created using advanced technology and a unique structure. Figures of Kumbhakarna and Meghnad will be installed next to it, each reaching a height of about 70 feet. Work on creating all three colossal figures is being carried out on a large scale.

Skilled artisans from the Delhi-NCR region have arrived in Kota to manufacture these huge models. Amir Khan, a resident of Ghaziabad, is responsible for creating this magnificent Ravana. He stated that the tradition of creating such figures has existed in his family since his great-grandfathers' time, and he has been continuously involved in making Ravanas in Kota since 2019.

Approximately 5 tons of iron, along with about 500 bamboo supports and frames for shaping, were used in the creation of the models. The outer surface is covered with approximately 1500 meters of velvet fabric, and 300 kg of rope and about 2 quintals of twine are used. To protect the figures from bad weather, imported waterproof paper is applied to them and secured with a paste made from flour, amounting to 1 to 2 quintals.

Special types of fireworks are also installed inside Ravana to provide various visual effects during the burning. According to Amir Khan, work on Ravana was interrupted last year due to plans to set a world record. This time, all preparations are proceeding in full readiness. The artisans predict that the Ravana figure will be completely ready by October 10th or 11th, after which preparations for its ceremonial burning on Dussehra day will follow.
