Tottenham wins Premier League match, ends winless streak thanks to Maddison's goal

Roberto De Zerbi's team, Tottenham, secured its first Premier League victory of the season by defeating Coventry 3-1. In the match held in London, James Maddison returned to the starting lineup after a 17-month absence and scored an impressive early goal.

On this favorable evening, Maddison demonstrated his qualities, telling Sky Sports that he wanted to play well and show the team what it had been lacking for the last eighteen months. He noted that the coach asked him to come out onto the field to enjoy his play from the sidelines.

The Tottenham midfielder expressed confidence that he could help the team climb the table, aiming to avoid the humiliation of the previous season when they narrowly avoided relegation.

Tottenham's losing streak

Before this match, Tottenham was at the bottom of the Premier League with an undesirable record—they were the only team from the top six English divisions that had not won a single game this season, despite significant summer spending.

De Zerbi sent his squad to training in Marbella, southern Spain, to start the season on a high note, and this paid off in the game against the competitive Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard.

Maddison, who previously tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in August 2025, scored the goal in the 14th minute following quality work from Mohammed Kudus on the right. Receiving the ball near the penalty area, he curved a shot past Coventry goalkeeper Karl Rushworth into the top corner, eliciting loud cheers from the home fans.

Maddison came close to doubling Tottenham's advantage half an hour later, but his cross, accompanied by a shot, went within inches of the goal. In the 49th minute, newly promoted Coventry equalized with a strike from Rodoni from close range.

After losing possession in the midfield, Coventry advanced. Rodoni's shot hit a teammate, but the ball returned to him, and he scored. Just nine minutes later, Tottenham regained the lead when Manchester City loanee Marmoush held Milan van Eyvik before unleashing a powerful long-range shot.

Kulusevski, whose career was interrupted by a knee injury in May 2025, came on as a substitute in the final minutes to huge applause from the fans. In the closing minutes, veteran Davies sealed the three points by shooting from the edge of the penalty area.

This victory lifted Tottenham to 16th place in the table, giving De Zerbi much-needed breathing room.
