Indian stock market crashes: Sensex falls by 900 points, investors lose 500 billion rupees

On Monday, the Indian stock market closed with a significant decline. The Sensex and Nifty indices fell by more than 1%, with shares of large banking companies contributing the most to this correction.

The Sensex dropped by 900 points, closing at 73,853, while the Nifty fell by 250 points, reaching 22,900. As a result of this sharp decline, investors' stock value decreased by 500 billion rupees, and the market capitalization of companies listed on the BSE fell below 468 billion rupees.

Among the notable falling stocks were Axis Bank, which closed down 4%, as well as Infosys and Bajaj Finance, whose quotes fell to 3%. Shares of Trent, NTPC, HDFC Bank, HUL, and Bajaj Finserv fell by more than 2%. A significant decline was also observed in the small and mid-cap segments.

The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap indices also closed with a 1% drop. Meanwhile, the India VIX market volatility index, which measures market fluctuations, rose by more than 4%, approaching the level of 14.7. Sectors were also affected: Nifty Private Bank fell by 2%, while Nifty FMCG, Nifty Financial Services, Nifty IT, Nifty Realty, and Nifty Consumer Durable all declined by more than 1%.

The market decline was accelerated by the fall in the share prices of major players, especially Axis Bank and HDFC Bank. After publishing its second-quarter results, Axis Bank's shares fell by more than 5%, and HDFC Bank's shares dropped by more than 2%.

Negative trends are observed globally. Although the price of Brent crude oil fell by more than 2%, it remains at a high level compared to last week, trading at $107 per barrel. WTI crude oil also exceeds $100 per barrel, increasing the risk of global inflation growth.

The negative impact is not only felt in the Indian market; Japan's Nikkei fell by 0.64%, Indonesia's market declined by 5%, and KOSPI showed a drop of more than 2%. Furthermore, there was also a sharp decline in the US market on Friday.

Foreign institutional investors were net buyers on Friday, purchasing shares worth 1166 crore. However, this purchase came after a period of significant selling throughout the month. Over 11 trading sessions this month, FIIs made the largest number of sales in 9 sessions.

Last week saw a rise of 2.8%, creating a certain momentum, and some better-than-expected results were presented, especially in the IT and banking sectors. Nevertheless, concerns remain regarding rising crude oil prices due to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Experts warn that if the oil price exceeds $109, tensions could increase. Technical analysis of the Nifty chart shows that it is near the 23,000 level, with support and resistance levels set at 22,950 and 23,300.

Investors earned over 400,000 crore rupees in the stock market after sharp index rises

On Tuesday, the Indian stock market proved favorable for investors. The last hour of trading was particularly significant when news emerged that caused a rapid rise in both the Sensex and Nifty indices.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) showed an impressive increase in its Sensex index by more than 1100 points, surpassing the 73,000 mark. Meanwhile, the Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) suddenly crossed the 22,700 mark, demonstrating a jump of more than 350 points.

Thanks to this strong growth in the stock market, investors were able to realize significant profits, earning over 400 million crore rupees.

Trading on the stock market on Tuesday began with some sluggishness. The BSE Sensex opened at 71,951, slightly above the previous close of 71,924. However, as trading progressed, the pace of Sensex growth increased. By noon, at half past two, the index was trading around 72,600, but then began to rise rapidly. In the end, the Sensex closed at 73,033.78, showing an increase of 1109 points or 1.54%.

The NSE Nifty followed the example of the Sensex. It opened at 22,364, which was identical to Monday's closing level (22,363). But its momentum also accelerated as trading volume increased. At the end of the session, NSE Nifty closed at 22,721.95, demonstrating a rise of 358 points or 1.60%.

The sharp surge in the last hour of trading allowed investors to make substantial profits. This is evidenced by the growth in the aggregate market capitalization of companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. By the time trading closed on Tuesday, the BSE market capitalization stood at 470,07,567.40 crore rupees, compared to 465,91,974.21 recorded on the previous business day. According to calculations, investors earned 415,593 crore rupees.

The reason for this acceleration of Sensex and Nifty was news announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. During the event, she made an important statement regarding taxes on long-term capital gains (LTCG) and short-term capital gains (STCG). She emphasized the government's readiness to carefully listen to investor concerns and feedback regarding the LTCG structure.

This statement by the Finance Minister was perceived as a serious signal for investors and market stakeholders, especially considering the constant demands from investors and market experts for the abolition or revision of the LTCG tax before the budget. Earlier, under Budget-2024, the Modi government had increased the LTCG tax on stocks to 12.5%, which caused concern among some stock market participants.

Amidst the strong growth on Tuesday, several stocks showed outstanding performance, bringing significant profits to their owners. Among them, in the category of large BSE companies were HCL Tech Share (growth of 8.28%), TCS Share (growth of 6.59%), Tech Mahindra Share (growth of 4.90%), Infosys Share (growth of 4.44%), HUL Share (growth of 2.94%), and Trent Share (growth of 2.61%).

Additionally, in the mid-cap company category, there was growth in Mphasis Share (growth of 5.18%), Coforge Share (growth of 4.46%), Phonix Share (growth of 3.92%), and Persistent Share (growth of 3.86%).
