The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, known as Whoosh, has completed its third year of operation, during which it has carried over 18 million passengers.
This 142.3-kilometer line is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour. Thanks to it, the travel time between Jakarta and Bandung has been reduced from more than three hours to just 46 minutes.
According to data from China Railway International, in the last three years, Whoosh has conducted 58,666 trips and accumulated over 8.9 million kilometers of safe operation, with an on-time performance rate of 99.4%.
A More Busy Railway
The daily number of trains has increased from 14 at launch to 62 during peak periods. The peak daily passenger flow reached 26,770 people. During the Eid al-Fitr holidays in 2026, Whoosh transported over 132,000 passengers, exceeding the previous year's figure by more than 10%, making it one of Indonesia's busiest rail corridors.
Passenger services have also expanded. Since the introduction of the frequent traveler card in June 2024, 47,577 such cards have been sold, with 3,366 cards sold in July 2026 alone—a monthly record and an increase of approximately 45% compared to the same period last year. The operator has also introduced flexible fares, multi-channel ticketing systems, and ticket modification services.
For elderly passengers, people with disabilities, and pregnant women, stations are equipped with elevators, tactile paving, accessible toilets, wider turnstiles, and ramps for wheelchairs. Each train has 32 priority seats and a special accessible toilet. Over 25,000 priority passengers have received service.
According to surveys conducted by PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), the joint venture of Chinese and Indonesian railway companies that built and operates the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, customer satisfaction stands at 95.79%, with 98.27% satisfied with punctuality and 97.35% with staff friendliness and professionalism.
Economic Side Effects
Commercial activities have begun to concentrate around the stations. Currently, 117 businesses operate at the Halim, Padalarang, and Tegalluar stations, including 29 micro, small, and medium enterprises that sell local food, beverages, souvenirs, and cultural products.
The operator has also partnered with the Bandung Shopping Festival, offering a 20% discount on travel for group tourists accredited for the event, thereby linking rail journeys with shopping, dining, and cultural events.
International passenger traffic is growing in parallel with domestic demand. According to KCIC data, since its launch, Whoosh has served over 960,000 international passengers.
Safety and Localization
The operator has adapted China's high-speed rail safety practices to Indonesia's climatic and geological conditions. Risk monitoring systems and disaster prevention equipment are used for 24-hour control and centralized dispatching.
Joint drills with Indonesian transport, search and rescue, fire, and medical services covered various scenarios, including train fires, passenger evacuation, medical assistance, and recovery of damaged trains.
Indonesian driver Wawan Setiawan noted: 'Thanks to Whoosh, I have mastered advanced driving skills and gained stable employment. Within the 'Belt and Road' initiative, this project has not only improved our infrastructure but also enhanced our national competitiveness.'
