Today promises to be a special day for film lovers as a series of movies have been released simultaneously. The award-winning national actress Yami Gautam presented her new film 'Naiyi Naveli'. The film's trailer was impressive and amusing, and the story seemed quite original—a narrative about a woman who is a witch.
The creators of the film are Anand El Rai and Himanshu Sharma, who previously directed hits such as 'Ranjana' and 'Tanu Weds Manu'. They are known for bringing something new and unique to every project they undertake. Therefore, expectations for Yami's film were high, and the cast features strong performers.
The action takes place in the city of Merat, where Raja (Adinant Kotare), the eldest son of the Avasti family, marries a girl (Yami Gautam). However, Raja's younger brother, Bantu (Anarag Thakur), dislikes his sister-in-law because he suspects she is a witch. Mohini behaves very strangely: she does not attend the temple but performs worship at the cemetery. People she touches become healthier. Despite looking like a sweet and pious girl, she is in danger if someone with ill intentions looks at her.
The entire Avasti family begins an investigation to uncover the truth about Mohini. One day, they discover that the daughter-in-law they considered meek and devout is actually a powerful goddess who has come to earth to eliminate evil. Her story dates back to the Treta Yuga, the time when Lord Rama and Ravana lived. Viewers will only understand which specific story related to the Ramayana led Mohini into the Avasti family by watching the film.
When presenting 'Naiyi Naveli', an important warning was initially given. Yami Gautam clearly stated that this story is purely fictional, and some parts do not relate to the actual history. Since the film contains many references and mentions related to the Ramayana, this warning was issued so that viewers would not confuse real history with the fictional plot. Yami Gautam's film starts with a hint of the Ramayana, and by the end of the viewing, it becomes clear why it is being released for the festival of Dussehra.
According to the creators, 'Naiyi Naveli' is a fantastic family entertainment film, and it indeed has a lot of humor. It makes you laugh from the very beginning. All members of the Avasti family are given sufficient screen time, and they are given time for viewers to understand their characters and empathize with them, which contributes to the good humor. The first half of the film is saturated with comedy and suspense, during which the entire story of Mohini is revealed.
However, after Mohini's identity is revealed, the film begins to weaken. By the intermission, the plot starts to fall apart. The second half does not make as much impression. The story shifts towards family drama and showcasing the villain's power, into which zombies also intervene. There are moments when the viewer wonders why this is happening. Although including references to the Ramayana is a good idea, over time it starts to seem inappropriate. Writer Himanshu Sharma perhaps should have presented this more successfully. The film's ending is weak; the attempt to teach a lesson for the Dussehra festival was not convincing enough. The dialogues are also not strong enough to warrant repetition. As for the songs, they also do not deserve a second listen.
In terms of acting, Yami Gautam and Adinant Kotare carry the film. This is Yami's first appearance in the role of a 'Superwoman', and it was pleasant to see that the main role belongs to a female character. Adinant Kotare also demonstrated surprisingly excellent acting, as suggested in the trailer.
Next are the supporting actors, who added spice to this film. Sunita Rajwar, Anarag Thakur, Aditya Kulshrestha (Kullu), Mita Vaishisht, Pratik Pachori, Sushmita Mukerji, Sonal Joe, Sunil Sinha—all of them performed well. Anarag Thakur, who played Bantu in the film, deserves special mention. Every scene had great comedic delivery and emotion. The actor demonstrated a good range in his performance.
The famous stand-up comedian and writer Kullu also plays a funny role that genuinely makes people laugh. At the same time, the viewer feels some regret for him. There is a unique aspect in the plot involving the interaction between Kullu and Mita Vaishisht, which perhaps no one expected to see. You will understand this by watching the film.
Overall, Yami Gautam's film 'Naiyi Naveli' is an average entertainment product whose plot does not amaze the imagination, but the comedy might appeal to you. You can show this film to your children for the festival of Dussehra.
