U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Saturday that the lifting of extensive sanctions and tariffs against Russia, initiated by President Donald Trump, represents a sixty-day pause. The goal of this pause is to analyze the impact of these measures on both the global and U.S. economies.
Rubio emphasized that economic restrictions affect a number of countries, not just Russia. He noted that various conflicts are impacting global energy prices, including the U.S. war against Iran and Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
According to Rubio, global conflicts are beginning to intersect, influencing not only world diesel and oil prices but also economic systems as a whole.
Lawmakers from both sides of the U.S. political spectrum sharply criticized Trump after he signed an executive order on Friday canceling large-scale sanctions and tariffs aimed at Russia. These measures were adopted by Congress last month.
The law, which was passed in September and signed by Trump, provided for sanctions against Russian officials, oligarchs, and financial institutions, and also gave Trump the authority to impose sanctions on major buyers of Russian oil and gas.
Trump's executive order followed an agreement reached with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, under which the export of Russian diesel fuel is permitted in exchange for sanctions relief. The impact of the sharp rise in diesel fuel prices due to the war in Iran is beginning to be felt in the U.S. economy, and concerns about the cost of living are a primary concern for voters ahead of key midterm elections next month.
