Kgiso Rabada returns to Proteas squad to strengthen fight against Australia in Gqeberha

A noticeable sense of relief prevails in the Proteas team camp ahead of the second Test match at the St George's Park stadium, as leading fast bowler Kgiso Rabada announced his full recovery and readiness to play against Australia.

Rabada's return is particularly timely given that the team found itself in a difficult position after a humiliating defeat by 214 runs in Kingsmead. Despite the importance of the two-match series and contentious moments in the World Test Championship, South Africa needs a leader to drive the team forward to level the series score and remain in the WTC race.

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma emphasized the psychological boost brought by Rabada's return. He stated that the player has been cleared by the fitness team and is available for selection. Bavuma noted that Rabada will be a significant addition and will instill confidence in the team, as the bowlers are heavily reliant on him, and he leads the attack in everything he does.

Rabada has experience playing against Australia, taking 58 wickets in 11 Test matches, having dismissed more English players than anyone else in his career. Bavuma expressed confidence in KG, adding that many players draw inspiration from his performances against Australia. He also stressed that excessive expectations cannot be placed on one player; everyone else must do their part for the team.

Despite Rabada's return, Bavuma confirmed that some squad decisions still need to be made. The cloudy conditions in Gqeberha and potentially slippery pitch have forced selectors to postpone the announcement of the starting lineup until morning. The main debate centers on balance: whether to continue using the spin duo Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer, or reinforce the middle order with an extra batsman or all-rounder.

Bavuma acknowledged that the final squad is not yet determined due to the weather uncertainty. He clarified that they have a clear idea of the desired composition but are waiting for developments. Using two spinners is being considered as one option, which will influence the choice between an extra batsman or an all-rounder, and it all depends on the morning situation.

Following the collapse of the first innings in Durban, which eliminated any chance of controlling the first match of the series, Bavuma made it clear that the task for the top order is to extend the duration of their batting innings and execute more decisively when an opportunity arises to do something significant for the team.
