Understanding Wi-Fi Router Indicators: A Guide to Device Operation

In modern homes, Wi-Fi routers are used almost universally to connect various devices such as smartphones, laptops, and smart TVs to the internet. These routers often have numerous LED indicators on their casing that may be constantly lit or blinking. Even without an internet connection, some of these lights remain active. This raises a natural question about the purpose of all these indicators and how one can judge the network's correct operation based on them.

These LEDs provide information about various router functions, allowing the user to assess the device's performance without needing deep technical knowledge. Below is a simple explanation of the meaning of each of these lights.

Power Indicator

The most important indicator is the power light, which signals that electricity is being supplied to the router. When the device is connected to a power source, the power indicator starts to glow. Constant illumination of this indicator usually means the router is functioning. However, if the light does not turn on, it may indicate power supply issues, adapter malfunction, or a failure in the router itself.

Some routers display a blinking power indicator initially after startup as the device goes through the boot process. If this blinking continues for a long time, it is recommended to consult the user manual or contact the internet service provider for inspection.

What Does the Internet or WAN Indicator Show?

This indicator shows whether the router has established a proper connection to the external internet. Depending on the model, it may be labeled 'Internet' or 'WAN'. WAN represents the communication channel through which the router connects to the internet service provider's network. If the 'Internet' indicator is lit normally, it signifies that the router has received an internet connection. If it is off or glowing red, it may indicate problems with the internet connection.

It is important to note that the appearance and signals of indicators vary across different router models, so to accurately determine the meaning of any indicator, you must study the specifications of the specific router. Furthermore, the mere fact that the internet indicator is lit does not guarantee flawless operation; sometimes, even when connected, the internet may run slowly or web pages may fail to load.

Reasons for Wi-Fi Indicator Illumination and Blinking

The Wi-Fi indicator shows the status of the router's wireless network, indicating whether the wireless communication function is enabled. It is through this network that mobile phones, laptops, and smart TVs connect to the internet without using cables. If this indicator is lit, the wireless network is active. If it is off, Wi-Fi might be disabled or there might be a fault in the router.

Blinking of this indicator occurs when data is being exchanged over the internet, for example, when a user is watching a video, downloading files, or sending/receiving data via an application. Such flickering is a completely normal phenomenon and does not indicate a router malfunction.

LAN Indicator Function

LAN ports are designed to connect the router to other devices via a network cable. For instance, if a computer, TV, or other equipment is connected to the router with a cable, the LAN port is used. Routers may have markings such as LAN 1, LAN 2, LAN 3, or LAN 4, where each number denotes a separate port. When a device is connected to such a port, the corresponding indicator may light up. It may also blink when data is being transmitted or received by that device.

If the cable-connected device is not working, and the corresponding LAN indicator is not lit, it is useful to check the condition of the cable, the port, or the connected equipment.

Differences Between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Indicators

Modern routers are often equipped with indicators for two frequency bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. These indicators display two different ways of transmitting data via Wi-Fi. The 2.4 GHz band is characterized by its signal's ability to travel relatively long distances through walls. Nevertheless, it is more susceptible to interference from other wireless devices.

The 5 GHz band can provide higher speeds under favorable conditions, but its range is usually shorter than that of 2.4 GHz, and it is more affected by obstacles and walls. If the router has such indicators, they show the activity of the respective network. However, in some models, both frequencies may operate under a single network name, and having separate indicators is not mandatory.

Purpose of the WPS Indicator

Some routers feature a WPS indicator. WPS stands for Wi-Fi Protected Setup. This function was developed to simplify the process of connecting certain devices to a Wi-Fi network where this capability is provided.

Over 85% of Japanese game developers use generative artificial intelligence

Generative artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly relevant in the Japanese gaming industry. According to preliminary data released by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), 85.8% of surveyed professionals confirmed the use of generative AI tools in their development activities.

These figures were presented during the Tokyo Game Show 2026 and constitute a preview of the 2026 Video Game Industry Report, the full version of which will be released in December. The survey collected approximately 1,349 valid responses from professionals affiliated with industry companies, including names such as Capcom, Sega, Level-5, and Konami.

The research points to a notable integration of this technology into work routines. Among participants, 63% reported using generative AI daily, while another 22.8% use it sporadically.

Comparing with a study conducted by CESA in 2025, which identified an adoption rate of 51% among 54 Japanese companies surveyed, a growth trend is observed, although researchers warn that differences in samples and audiences prevent a direct percentage comparison of the evolution.

The main benefits highlighted by professionals include increased productivity, reduced time needed to create games, and lower production costs.

The preview of the 2026 report does not yet specify which tasks are the focus of the technology's use. However, the previous 2025 survey provided references regarding its applications, indicating that the most common uses involved creating visual elements and images, generating text and narrative content, in addition to assisting with programming.

At that time, 32% of participating companies also mentioned employing artificial intelligence in the development of internal graphics engines. The implementation of these tools can help automate certain functions and streamline production phases, but their final results remain dependent on human evaluation and oversight.

Despite the expansion, the use of generative AI raises concerns related to intellectual property and the quality of the produced material. According to the investigation, the most cited safety measure by participants was the need for human review, correction, and supervision of AI-generated content. Other precautions adopted include designating tools permitted by corporations and limiting the direct use of content without professional intervention.

Tsutomu Masuda, CEO of CESA, commented that the findings demonstrate widespread and constant adoption of artificial intelligence in development environments. He also emphasized the importance of harmonizing technological progress with safeguarding intellectual property rights and preserving people-focused creative processes.

The full report, scheduled for December 2026, should offer more details on how Japanese professionals are integrating generative AI into game manufacturing.

Modern technologies are used to study and preserve the Silk Road heritage in Central Asia

Archaeological research is being conducted in Uzbekistan, where Wang Shujing is working in a laboratory in Bukhara region on the joint study of an ancient burial along the Silk Road. Using 3D modeling technology, the original layout of the Gamkhurd I burial complex is gradually being reconstructed on a computer screen.

Wang, representing the School of Archaeology and Museology at Peking University, heads the Chinese side of the archaeological expedition, which began in August 2025 in collaboration with the Samarkand Archaeological Institute. The team's work includes field excavations of the Gamkhurd I burial ground, located where the desert steppe meets the oasis of Bukhara in the Navoi region.

Based on the characteristics of the discovered burial structures, the joint archaeological group has preliminarily dated this burial site to the period between the 2nd century BCE and the 2nd century CE. This period coincides with major migrations across the Eurasian steppes and increased interaction between civilizations along the ancient Silk Road trade route.

The team integrates Chinese specialists in natural sciences and modern material analysis methods, allowing for in-depth research. Jamal Mirzaakhmedov, head of the Uzbek side, noted that this joint study makes a significant contribution to understanding the history of Uzbek nomadic and agricultural tribes and peoples.

Simultaneously, similar cooperation is observed in Kyrgyzstan in another area of archaeology. At the Ak-Beshim archaeological site in the Chuya region, known to the Chinese as the ancient city of Suyab, cultural heritage preservation expert Bai Yuxu from Dunhuang Academy in Northwest China is studying the ruins with colleagues to identify signs of structural damage.

Bai reported that this archaeological site suffers from foundation erosion of walls, peeling, structural cracks, and the formation of erosional gullies, warning that without timely and effective intervention, the damage could become irreversible.

To assist, Chinese specialists built an experimental wall on an open site nearby, simulating similar environmental conditions and soil properties. They reproduced ancient construction methods and monitored changes inside and outside the wall to document the progression of structural wear. Specialists are also conducting wall strengthening tests to evaluate various conservation methods, expecting that proven techniques will be more widely applied at the Ak-Beshim site to maximally preserve its original appearance.

Aisin Duishanaliyeva, an employee of the Ministry of Culture of Kyrgyzstan responsible for protecting historical and cultural monuments, emphasized the application of modern scientific methods by Chinese specialists and expressed hope for the continuation of joint conservation work. Staff from Dunhuang Academy have experience carrying out conservation work on the ruins of the ancient city of Beiting in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of Northwest China, which, like Ak-Beshim, is on the northern side of the Tian Shan and is heavily affected by the regional microclimate.

The conservation methods and techniques they use at Ak-Beshim can also be applied in other countries of Central Asia. Archaeological cooperation between China and Central Asian countries is not only academically significant; shared findings also help reinterpret the history of development and prosperity along the Silk Road, demonstrating traces of exchanges, mutual learning among civilizations, as well as their enrichment and progress.
