A representative of China's Ministry of Commerce stated on Friday that both China and the European Union (EU) must demonstrate sincerity in resolving emerging issues. He called on the EU to cooperate with China to promote healthy and stable development of bilateral economic and trade relations.
These remarks were made in response to a question about the EU's proposed 'two-track' approach to China at the summit, which combines continuing intensive consultations with tightening restrictions, including the possible use of the bloc's anti-coercion instrument.
The representative emphasized that economic and trade consultations between China and the EU are aimed at properly resolving disagreements through dialogue and consultation, while taking into account the concerns of each side.
It was noted that the agreement reached between China and the EU regarding hybrid vehicles was based on three principles agreed upon by both sides: compliance with World Trade Organization rules, a fact-based approach, and non-discrimination. This approach proved to be mutually beneficial and reciprocal, protecting the practical interests of Chinese enterprises while satisfying EU concerns and preventing the escalation of trade tensions.
The representative also stated that the claim that pressure from the EU led to results is completely unfounded. He added that the EU should not expect benefits through pressure or underestimate China's determination and ability to defend its own interests. In conclusion, China insists on working jointly with the EU in one direction to promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral economic and trade ties.
