Residents in areas near Vereeniging warned of danger after lion sighting

Residents of the Redan, Meyerton areas and surrounding Vereeniging have been urged to remain vigilant due to reports that the escaped lion is still at large.

The warning was issued after a report stated that a security guard allegedly spotted a large predator in Redan around 3:50 AM on Wednesday, October 14th. The animal's origin has not yet been determined, and residents are strongly advised to exercise caution while searches continue.

People living in the affected areas should refrain from walking, jogging, or cycling in isolated places until authorities confirm that the lion has been found and is safely contained. Furthermore, residents are advised to keep children and pets indoors and to avoid approaching the animal if it is sighted.

How to ensure safety when encountering a lion:

It is necessary to keep children and pets inside, close doors and gates, and avoid unnecessary trips outside in areas where the lion might be moving.

Never approach the animal

It is strictly forbidden to attempt to take close-up photos, feed the lion, chase it away, or try to catch it. The lion is a dangerous wild animal and must remain under the care of trained wildlife specialists.

If you see a lion, try to find shelter in a secure building or vehicle without moving toward the animal. Do not run or make sudden movements. If you encounter it on foot, avoid approaching or cornering it and slowly back away to a safe place, if possible without increasing the danger.

Responsibly warn others

Inform neighbors about the detected danger, especially those with children and pets. When sharing information on social media, only share verified data from authorities, not unconfirmed observations or speculation.

Report sightings immediately

Contact the police at 10111 and report the exact location, time, and direction of travel of the animal, if it can be observed safely. Do not organize search groups for the lion. Residents should continue to monitor official updates until authorities confirm that the animal has been found and is being kept safely.
