Inmates in Ujjain perform Garba in women's costumes during Navratri

The atmosphere of Navratri prevails in the Bhairavagarh prison in Ujjain: drums sound, dandiya beats, and worship of Goddess Durga takes place. At first glance, it resembles an ordinary Garba fair, but there is a peculiarity here: among the Garba participants are male inmates dressed in women's attire. Some are wearing traditional outfits, while others participate in the dance adorned.

This event is not taking place in an open area, but in the central Bhairavagarh prison in Madhya Pradesh state. A video of this event, which occurred during Navratri, went viral on social media, raising questions from the public: why are male inmates dancing Garba in women's clothes in prison? Is this done of their own free will, and what does the prison administration say about it?

First, let's consider the perspective of the prison administration. A statue of Goddess Durga was installed in Bhairavagarh prison for Navratri. According to the administration's statement, religious and cultural events are held for inmates annually. These programs take place in the evening for about an hour. During these events, inmates engage in Garba.

Prison Superintendent Manoj Sahu reported that about 20-25 inmates have been studying Garba for a year. These inmates present Garba at prison events. Among them are also male inmates who prepare in women's attire for the dance. The administration explained this as part of a regular cultural program, meaning it is not a spontaneous event; the inmates learn Garba and perform during Navratri.

Not only male inmates celebrate Navratri. According to the prison superintendent, a statue of Goddess Durga has also been installed in the women's wing, where female inmates perform prayers. Both male and female inmates observed a fast during Navratri. Holding religious events inside the prison itself is not unusual. However, this time the discussion is not about the worship or Garba itself, but about the performance of male inmates in women's costumes.

After the video appeared on social media, various comments emerged. Some viewed it as part of the cultural program, while others questioned the reason for dressing male inmates as women to perform Garba. The prison administration insists that the inmates study Garba and participate in cultural events. Garba during Navratri is a popular way to worship Goddess Durga. People across different parts of the country dance Garba and Dandiya in traditional attire.

Young Woman Accuses Police of Burning Hut in Badayun, Declaring: 'I Will Take Revenge Like Phulnan Devi'

A hut was burned down in Badayun, with a young woman standing in front of it in a state of anger. Her words, which were recorded on video, caused a wide resonance in social networks. The woman, whose name is Shivani Kashyap, accuses the police and the land surveyors, claiming that they forcibly entered her home and set the hut on fire. In a rage, she exclaimed, 'I will take revenge like Phulnan Devi.'

However, there is another version of events. The police state that they themselves set the hut on fire, and then the entire incident was distorted. This case occurred in the village of Labnari, which belongs to the Kadarchauk district in Badayun. The conflict arose between two parties over land surveying work.

According to the police version, on September 29, a land department team arrived in the village at Nanni Devi's complaint to conduct demarcation. After this, her ownership of the plot was restored. Nevertheless, the dispute flared up again the next day. On September 30, Nanni Devi began work on laying the foundation on her plot, but according to the police, the other party demolished this foundation.

The situation escalated, and on October 1, the revenue team along with police forces arrived in the village again to continue the demarcation work. However, the police claim that it was at this moment that government affairs were obstructed. Following this, a video appeared that changed the course of the entire case.

The video shows a burning hut, and in front of it stands the girl Shivani Kashyap, who is making claims against the police and the land surveyors. She alleges that the team illegally entered the house and burned the hut. She then exclaimed in anger: 'I will take revenge like Phulnan Devi.' But the police version differs from this. The police insist that they burned the hut themselves, and that after obstructing government activities, the incident was presented differently to accuse the police and the land surveyors.

On one side are the accusations of the young woman, and on the other are the statements of the police, with a dispute over land demarcation that began on September 29 between them. A criminal case has currently been registered regarding the matter. According to the police, the case was registered at the Kadarchauk police station based on the statement of a local land surveyor. The police arrested five people; one woman was released on bail, and action has been taken against four individuals.

After the girl's video went viral, Aditya Yadav, a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Socialist Party of Badayun, demanded an investigation. He stated that the investigation should be conducted not by the local police, but by the police of another precinct. He accused them of using articles to frame innocent people. Currently, there is a viral video, a police statement, and a demand from the deputy for an investigation. The story, which started with a single land demarcation, led to accusations, a fire, viral videos, and police action.
