New TRAI rule will allow displaying names for unknown calls to simplify fraud detection

In the era of digital technologies, communication has become very simple, but with it, the risks of cybercrime have also increased. Scammers often use phone calls, pretending to be bank or law enforcement employees, to deceive people.

Significant changes are expected for smartphone users starting November 1st. A feature is planned that will display a name for incoming calls from unknown numbers. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had previously issued guidelines for testing this capability.

Firstly, this feature will help identify the unknown caller. When receiving a call from an unfamiliar number, the registered name of that number may appear on the screen. This will give the user the opportunity to make an informed decision about whether to answer the call.

Secondly, it will facilitate the recognition of fraudulent calls. Displaying the caller's name can help identify a suspicious call. For example, if someone claims to be a bank or company employee, the user will have an additional way to verify the legitimacy of the call. However, a call cannot be considered safe based solely on the name.

Thirdly, transparency will increase. Previously, users often did not know who was calling from unknown numbers. Thanks to this feature, in addition to the number, the registered name of the caller may be displayed, providing the user with more information before answering and increasing communication transparency.

Finally, this will assist in combating cyber fraud. Many cyber scammers call, posing as police officers, government officials, or bank employees, trying to extort money. Displaying the caller's name can help recognize such suspicious calls. It is important to understand that this feature will not eliminate cyber fraud entirely, so under no circumstances should you share your bank details or one-time passwords (OTPs) with any unknown callers.
