Cardiologist warns doctors about the need to recognize their limits and take care of their own health

Despite doctors being trained to save lives, the constant demands of the profession can negatively affect their personal health, happiness, and family relationships. Dr. Brian Vezi strongly urges medical professionals to recognize their limitations, seek help when necessary, and find time for themselves instead of letting the demands of caring for others consume them.

Vezi noted that one of the most common mistakes is the belief that a person does not have enough time for both family and personal well-being. He stated: 'Most of us simply don't know when to stop. I think the biggest mistake many of us make is convincing ourselves that we don't have time for family, that we don't have time for ourselves.'

The pressure requiring constant availability for patients makes it difficult for doctors to step away, even when exhausted. However, Vezi emphasized that medical workers must understand that they cannot bear the responsibility of saving lives alone.

He called on doctors to abandon the notion of their indispensability and recognize the value of teamwork, including support from nurses, other doctors, and all medical staff. Vezi advised: 'Stop acting like a prima donna and say if you cannot do it, then no one else can. In this way, you learn as a doctor that you need help from your nurses, from sports specialists, from other doctors. Help is available; seek it instead of thinking you can do everything yourself.'

For Vezi, the ability to recognize when to stop is as important as recognizing when a patient needs medical attention. He believes that doctors should not let their sense of duty convince them to work around the clock or handle every problem independently.

Acknowledging that caring for sick patients is an inevitable part of the profession, he added that doctors must accept the fact that they cannot save everyone. He reminded: 'Patients have always died before you became a doctor, during your work as a doctor, and they will continue to die even after your death.'

His message serves as a reminder that medical professionals are also human beings who need rest, support, and time free from duties. While dedication to patients remains central to medicine, Vezi warned that doctors should not neglect their own needs in this process. He concluded: 'We sincerely love our patients, and they also provide us with income, but you must love yourselves and preserve your life, your health, and your happiness first so that you can serve.'
