Strong thunderstorms, heatwave, and wildfire threat expected in South Africa on Thursday

Residents of South Africa are preparing for a day with contrasting weather conditions on Thursday, October 15th. Northern provinces may face severe thunderstorms, while dangerous heatwave conditions persist in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 2 yellow warning for severe thunderstorms. According to this warning, heavy downpours, destructive winds, hail, and excessive lightning activity could trigger localized flooding and damage infrastructure and property.

This warning comes amid preparations across most of the country for another warm or hot day, with isolated rain and thunderstorms expected in many provinces.

Rainfall forecast and thunderstorm threat in Limpopo

According to the weather service's precipitation forecast, there is a 30% chance of rainfall in the affected areas of Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, with thunderstorms expected in the afternoon.

The Weather Service has identified the southwestern districts of Limpopo as particularly vulnerable to severe thunderstorms on Thursday. A Level 2 yellow warning is in effect, and thunderstorms are expected to intensify in some areas, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, hail, and dangerous lightning. This warning is valid from 15:00 to 20:59 on Thursday.

The Weather Service warned that thunderstorms could cause localized flooding of roads, bridges, and low-lying areas, while destructive winds and hail could threaten homes, vehicles, livestock, and infrastructure. Lightning activity may also disrupt municipal services, with informal settlements and vulnerable communities being especially susceptible to these harsh conditions.

Despite the approaching storms, temperatures in Limpopo are expected to be from hot to very hot, especially in the Lowveld, Limpopo Valley, and western Bushveld areas. Isolated thunderstorms are forecast for the southwestern part of the province, where the risk of severe weather is highest.

Gauteng expects 30% chance of rain with developing thunderstorms in the afternoon

Residents of Gauteng can expect partly cloudy and warm weather on Thursday, with high temperatures in the northernmost parts of the province. The Weather Service forecasts a 30% chance of isolated rain and thunderstorms, with a probability of precipitation in the afternoon. Thunderstorms may occur in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and surrounding areas due to unstable weather systems moving across the province.

Despite the possibility of cloud cover and daytime rain, the ultraviolet radiation (UVB) index will remain high. In neighboring Mpumalanga, the weather will start good, then become partly cloudy and warm or hot. There is a 30% chance of isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon over Hiveld, while other parts of the province are expected to remain mostly dry.

Heatwave sweeps KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape

While northern provinces suffer from thunderstorms, some parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape are expected to experience persistently high temperatures. The Weather Service has issued a heatwave warning for northern KwaZulu-Natal, where persistently high temperatures are expected to last until Friday, October 16th. Warm or very hot weather is forecast across the province, with extremely high temperatures expected in the northeastern part.

Eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal should also experience extremely uncomfortable conditions as the heat intensifies. Despite the high temperatures, some parts of the province have a 30% chance of isolated rain and thunderstorms, excluding the southern and far northern coastal areas and their adjacent inland territories. The UVB index is forecast to reach extreme levels.

In the Eastern Cape, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in the municipalities of Chris Hani, OR Tambo, and Alfred Nzo until Saturday, October 17th. The eastern half of the province will experience warm or hot weather, with a 30% chance of isolated rain and thunderstorms in the east. Coastal areas south of Keiskamma will remain cooler, and some areas are expected to have cloudiness and fog in the morning.

Fire threat increases in four provinces

The Weather Service has also warned of an extremely high risk of wildfires in parts of the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Free State, and North Cape. In the Eastern Cape, the warning applies to parts of the local municipalities of Dr Beyers Naudé, especially the Komdebu area.

Northern Limpopo and the district municipality of Harrismith in the Free State must also contend with dangerous fire weather conditions. In the North Cape, the warning covers the local municipalities of Tsantsabane, Dikgatlong, and Fokwane, as well as parts of the Psikile ka Seme district municipality. The combination of high temperatures, dry conditions, and wind can increase the risk of rapidly spreading bushfires.

In the West Cape, cloudy and cool weather is expected in the west in the morning, before most areas become partly cloudy and warm. A moderate or fresh northwesterly wind is forecast along the coast, and a lighter easterly wind will blow along the southern coast in the afternoon. The provincial UVB index should be very high.

The North Cape is expected to have clear or partly cloudy, windy, and warm or hot weather, with no significant precipitation shown on the weather service's rainfall map. The western half of the Eastern Cape will experience morning cloudiness and fog before the weather becomes clear or partly cloudy and warm or hot, although coastal areas will remain cooler.

In the North West province, residents can expect clear and warm or hot weather, followed by increased cloud cover leading to a 30% chance of isolated afternoon rain and thunderstorms in the eastern parts of the province. The Free State will also experience predominantly clear and warm or hot weather, with isolated rain and thunderstorms limited to the far eastern areas.

Most of the western and central parts of the country are expected to remain dry throughout Thursday. The Weather Service strongly urged residents in thunderstorm-prone areas to remain vigilant regarding rapidly changing weather conditions, especially where heavy rain could lead to flash flooding. Drivers should exercise caution on flooded roads and avoid attempting to cross overflowing bridges, and residents in areas experiencing extreme heat should limit prolonged sun exposure and maintain hydration. The South African Weather Service plans to update its regional forecast at 5 am on Thursday.

Strong thunderstorms and flood threat expected in South Africa this weekend due to cold and humid weather

The South African Weather Service has warned of possible severe thunderstorms and destructive rains in various parts of the country over the coming weekend. Affected areas may experience heavy downpours, hail, gusty winds, and localized flooding.

Residents of several provinces in South Africa will face humid and unstable weekend conditions as strong thunderstorms, heavy rains, and the risk of localized flooding are forecast across different regions.

The South African Weather Service has issued Yellow Level 2 warnings for Saturday, as a significant rain and thunderstorm front is forming over parts of the Northern Cape, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape.

The probability of precipitation in some southern areas reaches 80%, while scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected in a wider part of the inland areas with a 60% chance of precipitation.

Severe thunderstorms threaten the Northern and Western Cape

Yellow Level 2 warnings for severe thunderstorms are in effect in the eastern territories of the central and eastern parts of the Northern Cape, as well as in the Beaufort West municipality of the Western Cape. Heavy downpours, hail, excessive lightning, and strong gusty winds are possible. The service warns that thunderstorms could lead to localized flooding of settlements, roads, and bridges, as well as damage to infrastructure.

The Eastern Northern Cape will be cloudy, windy, and cool to warm on Saturday, with scattered rain and thunderstorms. Rain will become widespread in the southeastern sections, where the probability reaches 80%. In other parts of the Northern Cape, the chance of rain and thunderstorms is 60%, and in some western areas, it is 30%.

Eastern Cape faces risk of heavy rain and flooding

Western areas of the Eastern Cape are also under a Yellow Level 2 warning for destructive rains, with heavy downpours expected that can cause localized flooding of settlements, roads, and bridges. This warning is particularly important as destructive rains are forecast until Sunday.

On Saturday, the western half of the province is expected to have widespread rain, while the north will see rain and thunderstorms. The probability of precipitation in some places reaches 80%. The eastern half of the province will start with clear or partly cloudy and cool weather before cloudiness begins to build from the west, bringing scattered rain and thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms possible in Free State and North West Cape

The Free State is expected to have partial cloudiness and coolness, after which the sky will become overcast during the day. Isolated or scattered rain and thunderstorms are forecast, except in the eastern areas, where the probability of precipitation will range from 30% to 60%. The North West Cape will also be partially cloudy and cool, becoming overcast later in the day. Isolated rain and thunderstorms are expected in the western part with a 30% chance of precipitation.

Gauteng will avoid the worst weather on Saturday: clear conditions are expected in the morning, followed by partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will remain cool. In Mpumalanga, fog is expected in the south in the morning, after which the weather will be predominantly clear and cool, although it will be warmer in Lowveld. Limpopo will be clear and cool to warm.

Thunderstorms possible in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal will begin with morning fog in the inland areas, after which clear and warm weather will prevail. Cloud cover will increase during the day, and isolated rain and thunderstorms will develop outside the northwestern areas. The overall probability of precipitation is about 30%, with an expected increase in coastal winds in some places.

Humid weather continues into Sunday

Unstable weather will persist on Sunday, October 4th, with rain and thunderstorms spreading across most of the country. The Eastern Cape remains one of the wettest regions, with a 60% chance of precipitation over large areas of the province. Strong coastal winds, reaching about 45 km/h in some places, are also forecast.

A 60% chance of rain and thunderstorms is also expected in the Free State and parts of the Northern Cape, while a 30% chance applies to parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and western inland areas. Temperatures will drop noticeably in many central and eastern inland areas, while warmer weather will persist in some parts of the Western Cape and along sections of the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

Given that thunderstorms, heavy rains, and flood risks will affect several provinces, drivers and residents in warning zones should remain vigilant regarding rapidly changing conditions, especially near low-lying roads, bridges, and flood-prone settlements.
