Study in Uttarakhand shows rise in mental health and neurodevelopment issues in children

A new study conducted in the state of Uttarakhand has revealed an alarming trend of deteriorating mental health among children, as well as disruptions in their neurodevelopment. It is estimated that among approximately 35,746 children aged 0 to 17 in the region, conditions such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, or depression may be present. The report emphasizes that early onset depression is a warning sign, although the figure represents only a preliminary estimate, and not all children have a confirmed diagnosis.

This survey was carried out between 2024 and 2025 with the participation of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (NIMHANS) from Bangalore, as well as with the support of the Uttarakhand State Mental Health Department and the Dun Medical College.

According to the survey data, about 14,790 children and adolescents in Uttarakhand are facing neurodevelopmental issues. Furthermore, it is estimated that approximately 5,067 children suffer from anxiety or depression, 2,445 children may have autism, and 1,075 children may have ADHD. The survey covered both urban and rural areas in districts such as Dehradun, Pauri Garhwal, Almora, and Nainital.

The population estimates for the state were calculated using 2011 census data. According to this census, over 35 thousand children in the surveyed areas had similar problems; however, these projections may change with the release of new census data.

One of the most serious problems identified during the study is the lack of information among parents regarding the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood issues. Although 78.16 percent of respondents had heard of depression, only 12.15 percent knew about normal neurodevelopmental problems, and only 5.40 percent were aware of ADHD. Experts note that this lack of knowledge leads parents to miss diseases in time, which in turn causes delays in receiving necessary treatment.

Specialists from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences warn that children can also experience mental difficulties. Therefore, it is crucial for parents not to ignore changes in their child's behavior and to pay attention to specific signs. If a child is constantly in a state of fear or anxiety, exhibits sadness, or has difficulties with studying or concentration, they should consult a doctor immediately.
