Mahindra is preparing to make an unexpected move in the SUV market by introducing its model in CNG format. Previously, the company showcased its SUVs in petrol, diesel, and electric variants, but now plans to launch a version with a compressed natural gas (CNG) engine.
The first model in the Mahindra lineup equipped with CNG will be the Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG. The company has officially confirmed the launch date for this vehicle as October 15. Before the official start, this model was already spotted during surveillance, and leaked images show that the Mahindra XUV 3XO will be equipped with a dual-cylinder CNG system.
The interior features a fuel selector switch. This allows Mahindra to address a problem present in the XUV 3XO: the smallest trunk in the segment. The use of a two-cylinder technology allows the company to effectively manage this limitation.
In the dual-cylinder configuration, both CNG tanks are installed next to each other, secured with metal straps for reliable fastening. A similar installation is observed in the Tata Nexon i-CNG, which helps free up some space in the trunk for luggage.
Although Mahindra has not yet officially released this car, information regarding its trunk capacity and tank capacity is unavailable. As for the interior, the button to switch between CNG and petrol modes is located under the air conditioning vent on the driver's side. A light-colored lower panel is installed inside.
In the surveillance photos, the CNG versions were seen with two-tone alloy wheels. Additionally, turn indicators are mounted on the rearview mirrors. According to Mahindra teasers, this SUV will be equipped with a panoramic roof; however, the panoramic roof is available starting from the Revox Edge (O) version, while it appears earlier in the Revox M(O) version.
For the XUV 3XO CNG model, the company may use a 1.2-liter turbocharged MPI engine with pressurized fuel injection. This engine provides 110 hp and 200 Nm of torque in the petrol version. Information on power and torque in CNG mode is currently unknown. The company may also offer a manual transmission option with CNG.
The preliminary starting price may be below 10 thousand rupees. Adding the CNG option will help Mahindra attract users who prefer vehicles with low running costs.
