Pope Leo XIV was found to have a malignant tumor in his lung and underwent surgery to remove it.
According to information provided by surgeon Stefano Margaritor and the pontiff's attending physician Luigi Carboni, an emergency histological examination confirmed the presence of lung adenocarcinoma. This diagnosis had previously been suspected based on results obtained before the operation.
The surgical intervention was performed using video-assisted technology. After the procedure was completed, Leo XIV was transferred to a standard ward.
Previously, the 71-year-old pontiff had reported the detection of a small nodule in his lung.
