Apple introduces HomeView: projected price in South Africa and purchase viability analysis

Apple has officially entered a completely new product segment by introducing HomeView on Tuesday. Although smart home hubs have existed for over ten years, Apple is demonstrating a growing tendency to enter unoccupied market niches, which was previously seen with the release of the first foldable device, iPhone Duo, and the Apple Vision Pro headset two years ago.

This latest launch marks the second new hardware category for the tech giant in just 2026, with HomeView appearing to be perhaps the most unusual development to date.

Visually, the device draws inspiration from a scaled-down version of the iMac G4 2002; it attaches to a dome-shaped base via a metal bracket, upon which sits a 7-inch square display. However, it is critically important to note that HomeView relies entirely on wired power to operate. A wall-mounted configuration is also available, which essentially turns it into a stationary iPad mounted on the wall.

In the promotional video, Apple depicts a scene where a father prepares French toast for breakfast with his two children in the kitchen. The presentation placed great emphasis on the deep integration of Siri artificial intelligence into HomeView, even though users in real life rarely encounter the instant response of the voice assistant as advertised.

Ultimately, the device offers not much new compared to what an iPad can already do, except for one significant difference—seamless facial recognition for multiple users. This feature allows access to private messages via Face ID, demonstrated in the video when a sister logs in before her brother so he cannot see her correspondence.

The key point is this: at the official retail price of $299, a simple conversion shows a cost of about 4,921 South African Rand (R) before import duties and taxes. After localization, consumers in South Africa are likely to face a price closer to 6,000 R. Meanwhile, the basic iPad sells for significantly more, at 8,799 R, but it offers portability along with almost all the functions that HomeView provides.

It remains unclear whether HomeView will be able to capture a significant niche in the local market—a decision that has yet to be made.
