New Apple TV 4K released with doubled price, causing dissatisfaction among brand fans

The new Apple TV 4K has been released, which, despite promises related to the A19 chip, is causing strong indignation among users due to a significant price increase. The tech giant decided to subtly double the device's cost for buyers.

Earlier this year in June, Apple conducted a large-scale price increase across its entire product line, and Apple TV was no exception. The last update to the line occurred in 2022 with the release of the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation).

Before the implementation of local price hikes at the beginning of this year, the base 64GB model cost R2,999 at iStore, and the top version with 128GB sold for R3,599. However, today the same models cost R4,199 and R5,249 respectively.

Now the new Apple TV 4K starts at a price of $299 in America, which is approximately R4,900 in conversion. After accounting for import costs, duties, and local taxes, buyers in South Africa can expect the starting price to be around R6,000.

At such a price, Apple is forced to compete with more affordable and premium equipment that offers significantly greater functionality. At this stage, the main reasons for choosing the Apple TV 4K are brand loyalty and the desire to remain within the Apple ecosystem.

On a personal level, the consumer noted that choosing the Xbox Series S was an easy decision; the console was purchased for R5,999 in 2023. For this amount, which had much greater purchasing power three years ago, a gaming console with high-performance hardware and significantly better graphics capabilities could be acquired.

Nevertheless, today consumers are expected to pay the same amount (or even more considering inflation) for a media player that only six months ago cost half as much as it does now.

When comparing all these factors, justifying the purchase of the new Apple TV 4K becomes practically impossible.

Apple unveils new Apple TV 4K with price increase, HomeView, and HomePod mini 2

Apple has concluded a four-year wait by introducing new home products, including an updated Apple TV 4K. The new Apple TV 4K will feature a significantly increased price, starting from $299 (equivalent to R4,934), indicating a higher cost in South Africa.

During the 'Welcome Home' event, the company announced several updates to key products, as well as a completely new smart home control center called HomeView.

Despite the rich assortment of new hardware, the main event was the Apple TV 4K, which had not been technically updated for a very long time. Visually, the new streaming box will retain its familiar compact design, but users can expect a significant improvement in under-the-hood performance.

Apple TV 4K meets expectations

The new Apple TV 4K is equipped with the powerful A19 chip, the same silicon introduced in the iPhone 17 lineup last year. In addition to a substantial boost in performance, the base storage capacity has been increased to 128 GB.

Alongside the streaming device, Apple debuted a smart home display—HomeView—which differs from the company's traditional line of standalone speakers. According to leaks, the device will feature a 5.73-inch square display mounted on a metal arm and based on a round stand, clearly referencing the iconic early 2000s iMac G4 design.

HomeView is positioned as the central command hub for the Apple ecosystem, unifying Apple TV, MacBook, HomePod, and compatible smart devices such as security cameras and doorbells. Deep integration with next-generation Siri AI will make voice control the primary method of controlling connected spaces. Apple promotes HomeView as a multi-room device, encouraging customers to place it throughout their living space. The price starts at $300, which is approximately R4,951 in South Africa before local taxes, duties, and retail markups.

An updated HomePod mini 2 model was also released at a price of $149 (R2,458 before import), offering faster Wi-Fi performance and enhanced Siri AI features designed for seamless operation within the new HomePad ecosystem.
