Character Technologies, the company behind the Character.AI chatbot platform, has filed for bankruptcy in the United States. Concurrently, the company accepted a $20 million offer from Disney for its assets.
This sale process is subject to judicial oversight and may attract other potential buyers. Nevertheless, the company plans to keep the platform operational with minimal interruptions.
Known for its popularity among artificial intelligence users, Character.AI distinguishes itself by converting virtual conversations into immersive experiences. On the platform, users have the ability to interact with digital characters they create themselves or that are shared by the community. Features range from conversations with historical personalities to role-playing simulations and assistance in narrative development, providing a multifaceted environment for entertainment and thematic exploration.
Although the platform's future is shrouded in legal uncertainties and negotiations with Disney, it is relevant to recall what fueled the service's popularity among technology enthusiasts.
The negotiation is being conducted through Chapter 11, a procedure provided for under American legislation that allows for corporate restructuring under judicial supervision. Disney was designated as the 'stalking horse bidder,' a term used to indicate the buyer whose proposal sets the initial benchmark for a potential auction.
This implies that other interested parties may submit more advantageous proposals if the judicial system approves the proposed guidelines for the dispute. Character Technologies estimates finalizing the entire process between late November and early December 2026.
Documents submitted to the court indicate that the company's assets and liabilities range between $50 million and $100 million (approximately R$ 249.5 million to R$ 499 million). It is important to note that this range reflects the financial projections declared by the company itself, not the value of the offer presented by Disney.
The company assures that it will continue operating during the negotiation period. Colin Adams, CEO of Character.AI, justified the choice of the court-monitored sale process, stating: 'After a comprehensive analysis of the available alternatives, the board concluded that this court-supervised sale process offers the company the best opportunity to maximize value for all stakeholders.'
The service's future will depend directly on the outcome of this negotiation. There are still crucial points to be determined, such as the fact that the Disney proposal does not constitute a final acquisition while the process is ongoing, keeping Character.AI subject to the developments of the sale.
