The Meaning of Generation Z Slang: Yapping, Baddie, and Main Character

Generation Z differs from previous generations in that every aspect of their lives is something new and unique. They have their own style, their own language, and every action they take often becomes a subject of discussion. In the world of Gen Z, new trends and words appear daily. You have surely heard terms like 'Main Character,' 'Baddie,' and 'Yapping' on social media. Sometimes people use them in photo captions, and sometimes during conversations with friends. However, what do these words mean, and how does Gen Z use them? Let's break it down in simple terms.

The term 'Main Character' implies viewing one's own life as a movie plot where the person is the protagonist. With this mindset, an individual places great importance on their experiences, joys, and preferences. For example, if someone visits a cafe alone, listens to their favorite music, and considers this moment special, they perceive it as a wonderful episode of their life and place themselves at the center of that event. This can be called the 'main character energy.'

People also demonstrate this tendency by creating videos about their daily lives on social networks. Nevertheless, this does not mean that one should constantly consider oneself more important than others.

'Baddie' comes from the English word 'Bad.' Perhaps many might think it relates to something negative, but in Gen Z lexicon, this term is used to describe a person who is stylish, self-confident, and confident in their appearance. On social media, this word is especially often applied to girls who form their unique identity through fashion, makeup, and their look.

For instance, if a girl dresses the way she likes, shares photos with complete confidence, and feels comfortable in her style, she might be called a 'Baddie.' This concept goes beyond mere beauty; it also includes confidence and a lifestyle based on personal preferences.

'Yapping' means constant talking, especially when someone talks for a long time without stopping. Gen Z often uses this word in a humorous way. For example, if a friend talks for a long time about a favorite movie, an object of adoration, or some minor situation, another friend might say: 'Are you yapping for a long time?'. In social media, 'yapping' is also used to denote long conversations or continuous talking about something. It is not always negative; friends sometimes use it in a joking and friendly tone.

Social media, memes, reels, and online communication have contributed to the popularization of these terms. Thanks to them, young people can express their mood, style, and experience with minimal words. However, the meaning of these words can change depending on the context and situation. Therefore, the simplest way to understand them is to pay attention to the situation in which they are used.
