Although a battery can store electricity, it cannot connect to the main grid independently because the grid operates on alternating current (AC), while batteries use direct current (DC). A converter is required to convert power in both directions.
Abhay Adhya, founder and CEO of Enerzolve Smart Technologies, notes that a significant portion of this equipment, including its components, is imported. In 2025, he founded a Bengaluru-based startup with the aim of increasing the production of such equipment in India.
Adhya holds a degree in electrical engineering and electronics from BVB College in Hubli. He worked for six years at L&T, focusing on business development in India, Doha, and Nairobi. Later, he worked on mergers and acquisitions at Adani Transmission before becoming a regional sales head at Sterlite Power. In 2020, he joined Zetwerk as Vice President and Head of Energy Transition. Anupam Kumar Bhatt, who managed operations under Adhya at Zetwerk, became his co-founder after working at Rivexa.
Enerzolve operates in two areas: power electronics and metering instruments. The main product in power electronics is the power conversion system—a bidirectional inverter that connects the grid to the battery energy storage system. When charging the battery, it converts AC from the grid to DC. When discharging, it converts stored energy back into AC and directs it to the grid.
These systems have a capacity ranging from 30 kW to 2.5 MW and utilize high-frequency magnetics, coils, and cores for power handling within the device, as well as silicon carbide power chips. Operating at higher frequencies allows for smaller components. According to Adhya, the company's 2.5-megawatt unit is designed to weigh about two tons. The system is ready and undergoing testing and certification. Furthermore, Enerzolve has filed patent applications in India and the United States for some of its products.
The second area under development is the solid-state transformer. Unlike traditional transformers that use an iron core, it performs the same function through power electronics and software. The company imports semiconductors, including insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) that handle large currents, as well as silicon carbide components.
