Hanuma Vihari's Story: From Star in Sydney to Obscurity After Injury and Conflict

Today marks the birthday of an outstanding athlete who was once considered the future pillar of Indian Test cricket, but who is now in the shadows. Hanuma Vihari was born on October 13, 1993, in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, and today he turns 33.

No one can forget the 2021 Sydney Test when the Indian team was on the verge of defeat by Australian bowlers. In that difficult moment, Hanuma Vihari, despite battling a serious hamstring injury, stood on the field for hours like a rock and helped India avoid defeat.

However, what did Vihari receive in return for such selfless efforts for the same team and country? After July 2022, he was dropped from the Indian squad and has not appeared in the Indian jersey since.

Expressing his pain, Hanuma Vihari spoke in an interview about his deep disappointment and sadness after being dropped from the team. He shared that it had always been difficult for him not to be in the Test team. However, after talking to coach Rahul Dravid following his trip to England, no one showed interest in his affairs anymore, and he had no hopes left except to do his job.

Vihari's career decline is linked not only to poor form but also to political intrigues within the system. In 2024, a conflict with the Andhra Cricket Association surfaced during a Ranji match. Vihari himself revealed that he was penalized by being denied captaincy for shouting at the son of a local politician.

When Vihari released a letter signed by 15 players against this association's tyranny, his entire career was put at risk. After this, he was not even selected for the India-A team, and his name was never mentioned by selectors. During his career for India, he scored 839 runs in 28 innings across 16 Test matches, including one century and five fifties.

Changes in the Indian squad: Anshul Kamboj replaces injured Prasidh Krishna, and Naman Dir replaces Washington Sundar in the T20 series

Significant changes occurred in the Indian team ahead of the third ODI against West Indies. Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna was dropped from the squad for the third match after sustaining an injury during the second ODI. He has been replaced by young pacer Anshul Kamboj.

Prasidh Krishna suffered a left hamstring injury during the second ODI held in Guwahati. He left the field after bowling only five overs. He will now go to the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bangalore for further examination and rehabilitation.

Anshul Kamboj has been included in the squad for the third and final ODI and will join the Indian team in Chandigarh. The third ODI is scheduled for October 1 at the new PCA stadium in New Chandigarh.

Furthermore, adjustments were made to the Indian team ahead of the upcoming T20 series against West Indies. The senior selection committee decided to drop Washington Sundar from the T20I squad after consulting with the team management.

This decision was taken considering the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. Since the Ranji Trophy season begins on October 11, Sundar will be able to prepare for the Test series by playing first-class cricket for his regional team.

Naman Dir has been included in the T20I squad in his place. Thus, India had to make changes to both the ODI and T20I squads during the West Indies series.

The updated Indian ODI squad for the West Indies series includes: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rituraj Gaikwad, KL Rahul (vice-captain), Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj, Gurunoor Barar, Mohammed Siraj, Akib Nabi, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Naman Dir.

The updated Indian team for the T20 against West Indies is as follows: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Tilak Verma (vice-captain), Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Naman Dir, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshadeep Singh, Prince Yadav, and Mayank Yadav.

The first ODI against West Indies took place on September 27 in Tiruvannamalai, which India won by 8 wickets. The second match, played in Guwahati, was also won by India by eight wickets. The third ODI will take place on October 3 in New Chandigarh. Following this, the five-match T20I series will begin on October 6.

Kuldeep Yadav reaches 200 ODI wickets, surpassing Shane Warne in balls bowled

In the match between India and West Indies, players from the West Indies demonstrated strong play, dealing a serious blow to the Indian bowlers. John Campbell, Shai Hope, and Amir Jangu each scored a century, bringing the West Indies total to 405 runs. In rainy conditions, Kuldeep Yadav recorded a significant record.

In his 123rd ODI match, Kuldeep Yadav completed his 200th wicket, becoming the second fastest bowler in Indian history to reach this milestone. He is only surpassed by Mohammed Shammi, who took 200 wickets in 104 ODIs. Following him are Ajit Agarkar (133), Zaheer Khan (144), and Anil Kumble/Javagal Srinath (147).

Kuldeep secured his 200th wicket of Kemi Paul, who was caught by Virat Kohli in the long-on region after 45.1 overs. This moment marked Kuldeep's achievement of a double century in ODIs. Furthermore, Kuldeep surpassed Shane Warne in the number of balls required to achieve 200 ODI wickets, completing them in only 6319 deliveries. Among spinners, only Shaklan Mushtaq (5451) and Rashid Khan (5782) achieved this result with fewer balls. Following Kuldeep are Adam Jampa (6385), Adil Rashid (6881), and Shane Warne (6983).

Despite the record attack by the West Indies, Kuldeep remained among the few Indian bowlers who managed to partially contain the pace of the game. In his full quota of 10 overs, he took 2 wickets, conceding 65 runs, resulting in an economy rate of 6.50.

Before the West Indies reached 405 runs, Campbell scored 101 runs off 68 balls, Hope scored 104 runs off 94 balls, and Jangu scored 114 runs off just 77 balls. This was a rare sight in one ODI match where three batsmen score a century.
