West Indies has achieved an unprecedented feat in T20 International cricket, making them the first team in the world to score 2000 sixes in T20 Internationals. This historic milestone was reached during the third match of the T20 series against India, played in Indore on Sunday (October 11). In this match, West Indies batsmen hit a total of 13 sixes, which helped them reach this milestone, even though the team ultimately lost the match by 14 runs.
Before this achievement, West Indies had recorded 1997 sixes, meaning they only needed three more sixes to cross the 2000 mark. The Caribbean batsmen displayed aggressive play against the Indian bowlers and carved out a unique place in the history of T20 cricket.
This fact demonstrates that the Caribbean team has made aggressive batting its main strength in the short format. However, India is not far behind in this list and has the potential to reach this figure in upcoming matches. Currently, the Indian team has scored 1997 sixes, while New Zealand is in third place with 1585 sixes. Pakistan and South Africa are also included in this list.
The list of players who have hit the most sixes in T20Is is as follows: West Indies (most, 2010), India (1997), New Zealand (1585), Pakistan (1500), South Africa (1407), England (1406), and Australia (1400).
At the start of the match, India lost the toss and batted first, scoring 223 runs. Abhishek Sharma scored 69 runs off just 30 balls, including six fours and five sixes. Ishan Kishan also accelerated the Indian innings by scoring 37 runs off 18 balls. A fast partnership of 108 runs was built between these two batsmen for the second wicket. During this innings, Abhishek Sharma also completed his 2000 runs in T20 Internationals. However, India could not fully capitalize on its strong start due to continuous wickets falling in the middle overs.
Chasing the target of 224, West Indies lost an early wicket in the form of Shai Hope. Subsequently, Shimron Hetmyer and Kamil Pooran stabilized the innings. Hetmyer scored 43 runs off 26 balls, while Pooran played a knock of 42 runs off 27 balls. Together, these two formed a partnership of 60 runs for the second wicket. Pooran ramped up the excitement of the match by hitting three sixes in one over. Following this, Sam Springer scored an unbeaten 35 runs off 11 balls alone, but due to the increasing required run rate, West Indies could not achieve the target and managed only 209 runs for seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs.
Indian bowlers demonstrated better control during high-pressure moments. Arshdeep Singh took three wickets for 44 runs and was named 'Player of the Match'. He dismissed captain Shai Hope early on and also secured crucial wickets in the final overs. Naman Dhir provided good support by taking two wickets. The fourth match of the series will be played in Hyderabad on October 14, while the final match will be in Bengaluru on October 17. Both matches will start at 7 PM Indian time.
