China Mobile completes expansion of computing center in Hohhot, reaching total capacity of 20,100 PFLOPS

According to Inner Mongolia Daily, China Mobile has completed a phase of expansion for its intelligent computing center located in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia province. The project involved the construction of buildings B25 and B27 at the China Mobile data center in the New Horinger Zone. The construction was carried out by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau and covered an area of approximately 44,500 square meters, providing a total IT capacity of 120 MW.

After the expanded complex is commissioned, the facility's total computing power will reach 20,100 PFLOPS, of which 16,700 PFLOPS is dedicated to artificial intelligence-related intelligent computing tasks. The report did not specify the numerical precision of these figures. Approximately 90% of this capacity is oriented towards serving the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, while 88% of the energy supply comes from green electricity.

The campus in Hohhot is part of the national program 'Eastern Data, Western Computing,' which aims to shift computational loads from energy-intensive eastern cities to western regions where cheaper renewable energy is available. It serves as a key node in China Mobile's 4+N+31+X computing network and a center within the national integrated computing network. According to Securities Times, the one-way latency between Hohhot and Beijing via a 400G OTN backbone is 3.5 milliseconds, meeting the requirements of latency-sensitive corporate clients in the Beijing area.

The intelligent computing center in Hohhot is positioned as the world's largest center of its kind managed by a telecommunications operator on a single site. Before this expansion, it began operations in December 2025, housing approximately 20,000 AI accelerators, with over 85% of its AI chips manufactured domestically. The publication IT Home specifically points to the scale of AI in the Hohhot node, featuring 19,000 cards built using heterogeneous computing, GPU pooling, and cold plate liquid cooling.

The cooling system and power supply are another advantage of this facility. Thanks to large-scale cold plate liquid cooling and an AI energy management system, the average energy efficiency has been reduced to 1.15. In 2025, the center acquired 750 million kWh of green energy through direct procurement and long-term contracts, which allowed it to reduce carbon emissions by 370,000 tons. The New Horinger Zone is located in the center of Inner Mongolia's wind and solar base, which is one of the largest in China. Furthermore, China Mobile operates what it calls the largest cluster intelligent computing center for operators in Harbin.

Jio and Airtel added millions of mobile users in August, according to TRAI

According to data published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Monday, Reliance Jio achieved the largest growth in wireless mobile subscribers in August, attracting nearly 2.40 million new users. It was followed by Bharti Airtel, which added about 2.11 million subscribers.

Jio's wireless mobile subscriber base increased to 508.43 million by the end of August, up from 506.03 million at the end of July, corresponding to a net increase of 2.40 million subscribers. Airtel also grew its base by 2.11 million users, bringing it to approximately 491.60 million from 489.49 million.

During this month, Vodafone Idea added approximately 506 thousand wireless mobile subscribers, while the state-owned company BSNL gained almost 493 thousand new users. MTNL, conversely, recorded a decrease in subscribers of approximately 5.9 thousand.

Overall, the total number of wireless subscribers (including mobile and fixed wireless access) reached 1,312.25 million by the end of August 2026, representing a monthly growth of 0.46 percent. TRAI reported that the number of wireless subscriptions in urban areas rose from 753.86 million in July 2026 to 759.11 million in August 2026. Meanwhile, subscriptions in rural areas also increased from 552.40 million to 553.14 million over the same period.

Consequently, the monthly growth rate of wireless subscriptions in cities was 0.70 percent, and in rural areas, it was 0.13 percent. Private telecom operators continue to dominate the mobile market, accounting for 92.75 percent of all wireless mobile subscribers by the end of August, while state-owned BSNL and MTNL together hold the remaining 7.25 percent.

TRAI noted that Airtel maintains the highest share of active mobile subscribers among major operators, as 99.01 percent of Airtel's wireless mobile subscriber base was active on the date of the Visitor Location Register (VLR) peak in August. Furthermore, the total number of telephone subscribers, including landlines, grew to 1,360.70 million by the end of August, which is a monthly increase of 0.47 percent, according to TRAI data.
