Seabelo Senatla performs a somersault during the Stormers vs Sharks match in the URC

During a match in the United Rugby Championship (URC) on Saturday, the Stormers team defeated the Sharks with a score of 39-22 at the DHL stadium. Stormers goalkeeper Seabelo Senatla delighted the fans by performing an impressive somersault after scoring the first touchdown in the iconic 'Men in Black' kit, which reminded people of club legend Breton Pauls, who was known for his acrobatic style when scoring tries.

Stormers captain Ruan Nel joked that Senatla's decision was questionable when the winger celebrated the goal with a somersault during the URC derby. However, Senatla's flip-flack was just part of a performance that fittingly represented the Cape Town team's iconic 'Men in Black' kit. The team demonstrated the power of its forwards, the reliability of its defense, and attacking talent, allowing them to secure the victory with a bonus point for six tries.

The black kit, which is a reference to the 1999 team, has long been associated with the fearless playing style of the Stormers. Since nearly 50 former players who wore this kit watched the game, the team had the opportunity to honor this legacy, and they did so very vividly.

Pressure on the Sharks was exerted through scrum play, and the almost unstoppable rolling maul and player attacks provided the finishing touches to brilliant tries. Three goals were scored using driving mauls, and Senatla's first try, accompanied by a somersault reminiscent of former Stormers and Springboks winger Breton Pauls, added a touch of nostalgia to the event.

Pauls, who commented on the game near the field, also admired Senatla's acrobatics. Nel commented on Senatla's celebration, saying: 'I don't even think he plans his outfits, you know. So it's probably a spontaneous decision. But knowing Senatla, he probably thought: 'If I score today, I'll allow myself something like this'.' He also noted: 'I'm just happy because he had both knees taped, and he still went to do a somersault. (It's) probably not the best decision-making to fly like that! But, yes, it's a really cool moment.'

The Link Between Stormers Eras

For Nel, this performance perfectly reflected the essence of the kit: the connection between the rich history of the Stormers and the type of rugby their fans want to see in modern sport. He emphasized that the team's identity has been shaped by generations of great athletes, with the original 'Men in Black' era embodying a bold, attacking style of play that remains close to the hearts of the fans.

Nel added that if this style is combined with modern elements such as mauls and scrums, as well as strong defensive systems, it results in something truly beautiful. He also mentioned that the participation of club legend Corne Krige, captain of the 1999 team, in presenting the kits before the match added extra meaning to the event. Krige is a hero to many players who wore the kit over their heads while battling the Sharks, and according to Nel, Krige's presence at the kit presentation held great significance for them.
